[00:35:20] <lyzidiamond> GJdan: this has been my solution mostly: http://lyzidiamond.com/posts/osgeo-august-meeting/
[00:36:12] <lyzidiamond> GJdan: More lately, this: http://lyzidiamond.com/posts/external-geojson-and-leaflet-the-other-way/
[00:36:32] -!- cwmma has quit [Quit: cwmma]
[00:36:50] -!- cwmma [cwmma!~cwmma@c-98-229-58-62.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] has joined #leaflet
[00:37:06] <lyzidiamond> (sorry for the crappy CSS)
[00:37:34] <GJdan> ah, first one is the silly idea I said :)
[00:38:28] <GJdan> I think jquery no longer has a getJSON method because it's not reliable seeing as older browsers don't have the JSON object included
[00:38:30] <lyzidiamond> the link relation?
[00:38:40] <lyzidiamond> what? really?
[00:38:57] <lyzidiamond> query definitely still has getjson
[00:39:00] -!- arvidkahl [arvidkahl!~arvidkahl@brln-4d0c0e24.pool.mediaWays.net] has joined #leaflet
[00:39:02] <lyzidiamond> *jquery
[00:39:07] <GJdan> there's a js library that can be included to provide a JSON object if it doens't exist
[00:39:09] <GJdan> hmm
[00:39:18] -!- skorasaurus [skorasaurus!~skors@cpe-65-185-69-50.neo.res.rr.com] has joined #leaflet
[00:39:19] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
[00:39:29] <GJdan> oh nvermind
[00:39:42] <GJdan> I was thinking of parseJSON
[00:40:06] <lyzidiamond> ahh, okay
[00:40:07] <lyzidiamond> that makes sense
[00:40:39] <GJdan> grabbing json from GET huh... limited to the url bar size limit then I imagine?
[00:40:40] <lyzidiamond> the async thing is annoying w/r/t getJSON, but i honestly haven't found any other solution that is more elegant / that i like more
[00:40:51] <lyzidiamond> which is why i was asking :)
[00:41:01] <lyzidiamond> oh, i didn't even think about that. that's an interesting question
[00:41:23] <GJdan> or oh, I see nvm ajax
[00:41:24] <cwmma> ajax is always async
[00:41:30] <GJdan> ajax is a good idea
[00:41:31] <cwmma> or it's lying/python
[00:41:36] <lyzidiamond> hahaha
[00:41:50] <lyzidiamond> i know ajax is always async... that's what the a stands for
[00:42:08] <cwmma> well the x is lie so the a could be to
[00:42:11] <lyzidiamond> hahaha
[00:42:17] <GJdan> then it woudln't bea problem unless the path to the file is rediculously large
[00:42:20] <cwmma> there is a sync version of xhr
[00:42:26] <GJdan> I was imagining the actual json being in GET
[00:42:45] <lyzidiamond> it's been a fairly elegant solution, but i was just wondering if there was something else olds had been doing.
[00:42:53] <lyzidiamond> *folks
[00:43:00] <GJdan> looking at this, I've done this before
[00:43:23] <GJdan> didn't use getJSON though, think I just used $.ajax directly
[00:43:35] <lyzidiamond> ah, alright
[00:43:48] <cwmma> I don't actually know what you guys are talking about
[00:44:21] <GJdan> I like using ajax though, you can use it to load over time if there's a tonne of data too, though I think one should avoid massive leaflet maps if possible
[00:44:31] <GJdan> if you're using vector data anyways
[00:45:07] <GJdan> cwmma: lyzidiamond was wondering about methods to retrieve the geojson object from a json file

[14:04:37] <Pro777> I just tested the object with geojsonlint.com and it renders there properly.
[14:04:43] <Pro777> So I'm not sure what the issue is.

[15:22:08] -!- Adventsparky [Adventsparky!c1785e23@gateway/web/freenode/ip.193.120.94.35] has joined #leaflet
[15:22:20] <Adventsparky> Hey
[15:22:42] <Adventsparky> Just wondering if anyone uses Leaflet in the following way:
[15:24:23] * chillly is turning blue holding his breath ...
[15:24:26] <Adventsparky> Map loads, passes bounds to server, server sends back X markers, show them on the map. User moves the map and now the server gives back X markers, the first set are removed and the new set added. I also use the clusterer on top of Leaflet to cluster these markers.
[15:25:15] <Adventsparky> So what my question on top of that is really about what the best practice to follow is, as regards performance.
[15:25:23] <chillly> Adventsparky, All the time, quite usual way of working esp. with larger datasets
[15:25:41] <b_b> i've tried it one day
[15:26:05] <Adventsparky> Two main options are to remove the cluster layer, make a new one, and add it to the map, pretty fast, this is the fastest I've found, but looks ugly, as the animations are interrupted and the new dataset popsin
[15:26:10] <b_b> but it's not good for perfs if your database doesn't use geo index
[15:26:34] <b_b> it make the map lag every time you move it
[15:26:57] <Adventsparky> The other option looks much nicer, as the animations remain intact, and that's to clear the markers in the cluster layer and add the new ones, but this is much slower and the map feels laggy.
[15:27:31] <Adventsparky> The database is fast, data coming back isn't the issue, I'm pulling directly from Solr, getting a lot of data back extremely quick, the slow part is once the JSON hits the page
[15:27:56] <Adventsparky> chilly, what do you do? clear and add? or only add new markers etc?
[15:28:15] <chillly> I don't think the cluster changes are ugly. The map was panned or zoomed, the cluster have to reflect that, people seem happy to see that change
[15:28:37] <Adventsparky> b_b the database is Solr (Lucene) so I can search it very fast with geo bounds basically, it's awesome :)
[15:28:51] <chillly> I dump the markers / clusters and add new ones again. It's quick and people seem happy
[15:29:07] <Adventsparky> It's definitiely the fastest way
[15:31:18] <chillly> if you have 500 or fewer markers (approx) in total clustering handles that without deleting & adding. So only need that for a lot of markers.
[15:31:22] <Adventsparky> What I meant by animations being interrupted is that as soon as the map starts to zoom, it fires the AJAX call and starts the animations on the clusters, now a few ms later, the data is back and I update the markers, if clearing the clusterer and adding a new one, the animation 'freezes' for a split second and then the new clusters pop up.
[15:31:55] <chillly> how many markers?
[15:32:00] <Adventsparky> Numbers are 5k and fewer, over 5k I do my own grid clustering
[15:32:26] <Adventsparky> Test set I'm using for these tests is 900
[15:32:35] <chillly> OK, 5k is a lot for cluster to handle at once, esp on mobile devices
[15:33:29] -!- wboykinm [wboykinm!~wboykinm@65-183-134-62-dhcp.burlingtontelecom.net] has joined #leaflet
[15:33:36] <Adventsparky> I agree, given what it's used for though, that's not an issue
[15:33:42] <Adventsparky> It's not used on mobile devices
[15:34:19] <Adventsparky> It's a tool used for allocating work to users, water meter reading infact
[15:34:37] <Adventsparky> It works fantastic, I'm just trying to make it better :P
[15:35:04] <Reventlov> "I" use the second option
[15:35:25] <Reventlov> (but with "static" data refreshed every n seconds)
[15:35:35] <chillly> Good luck with it, must go, customer calling :)
[15:35:44] -!- chillly has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[15:35:50] <ybon> Adventsparky: I'd use vector tile layers for this
[15:35:51] <Reventlov> (so, only the markers on screen are rendered)
[15:36:16] <ybon> b_b: you had done this before also, nope?
[15:36:30] <Adventsparky> Only the visible markers are important for me too
[15:36:41] <b_b> yes i've tested it with tilestache
[15:36:46] <ybon> one reason more to use vector tile layers :)
[15:36:50] <Adventsparky> When the user moves or zooms, the new bounds head off to Solr and I get back the appropriate info for that area
[15:37:17] <Reventlov> Adventsparky: then render the new data before removing the old one.
[15:37:23] <b_b> it was tiled json exactlly
[15:37:54] <b_b> http://tiles.kupaia.fr/ 3 first demos here
[15:38:04] <b_b> but it's not really good
[15:38:06] <ybon> Adventsparky: https://github.com/yohanboniface/djangopeople/blob/clientclustering/djangopeople/djangopeople/static/djangopeople/js/maps.js#L56 as an example
[15:38:16] <b_b> cause the json is tiled, not good for other geos than points
[15:38:24] <ybon> that's right
[15:43:25] <Adventsparky> Reventlov: I'll try a few experiments and see
[15:43:32] -!- wboykinm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[15:44:32] <Adventsparky> Obviously given how different everyones environments are, what works for one might not work for another. I'll try out a few things
[15:45:00] <Reventlov> on http://raildar.fr only the icons on the screen are rendered.
[15:48:22] <Adventsparky> The main difference I think is that I'm using the marker cluster on top of Leaflet and that's where my issue is, not actually with straight up adding/removing markers to/from the map, doing it that way is lightning quick, it doesn't even feel like markers are being added/removed
[15:49:26] -!- balestrino has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
[15:49:49] <Adventsparky> specifically it's relating to the animations breaking when you alter the layers as it just jumps to the new set of data, thinking about it now though, if there is a hook on the clusterer animations I can wait for it to finish and build the new markers in the meantime and add them when it's done
[15:51:41] <Reventlov> do you know the animateAddingMarkers option ?
[15:52:22] <Adventsparky> I know OF it but I don't know what it does

[23:21:49] <Tomashe> Hey guys
[23:22:38] <Tomashe> anyone is here? i got a question regarding to Markers. for now , all i can see if that i can put a image as a marker. so i wonder if there is any way to place a div as a marker and assign to him a class with css
[23:26:13] <patrickarlt> Tomashe: you want L.DivIcon http://leafletjs.com/reference.html#divicon
[23:27:02] <patrickarlt> then you can assign a css "className" option and assign content with the "html" option

[23:42:57] <Tomashe> so far looking good
[23:43:00] <Tomashe> but i need to test it first :)
[23:44:05] <Tomashe> weird , its showing me nothing
[23:44:07] <Tomashe> hmm
[23:45:21] <patrickarlt> Tomashe: its an icon so you need to make a marker using your icon then add the marker to the map
[23:46:12] <Tomashe> var MeIcon = L.divIcon({className: 'map-me-icon'});
[23:46:13] <Tomashe> L.marker([40.790278, -73.959722], {icon: MeIcon}).addTo(map);
[23:46:15] <Tomashe> this is my code
[23:46:32] <Tomashe> map-me-icon is just a class with bg image and size
[23:47:40] <patrickarlt> yeah then you can style map-me-icon with css
[23:48:32] <patrickarlt> Tomashe: http://jsfiddle.net/3BSEh/2/
[23:49:07] <Tomashe> but this is what i did
[23:49:14] <Tomashe> i have the styles for that class
[23:49:37] -!- dnalerom_ has quit [Client Quit]
[23:49:41] <Tomashe> ohhh i can see it now
[23:49:54] <Tomashe> so background images wont work on that div only css like background color
[23:50:35] <Tomashe> and i have to define icon size in the js
[23:51:04] <Tomashe> the icone-size was what i was missed
[23:51:17] <patrickarlt> Tomashe: you can also set icon-size as "null" if you want to define the size in css
[23:51:51] <patrickarlt> iconSize: null and then you can do width/height and offset (margin-top/margin-left) in css
