[01:12:30] <nlancaster> hello all, anyone know anything about mach3? and it may be something that is a common issue on other controller software. I appear to be losing many steps when changing directions.

[01:13:18] <nlancaster> and if I cycle the axis .5 inches it loses/gains more and more steps
[01:13:37] <PetefromTn_> Hello
[01:13:37] <jdh> lower the accel. then switch to LinuxCNC.

[01:17:09] <nlancaster> how low should I go, and I tried everything between 2 and 20 with similar results

[01:33:59] <nlancaster> panasync no it happens in x any y. z is fine
[01:34:08] <nlancaster> x and y are on 5start 2turn per inch lead screws.
[01:34:31] <FinboySlick> Anyone here has an idea of the kind of amperage that a typical american car horn needs to start? I'd have expected 2.5 amps of 12V DC to do but it just clicks once.
[01:35:38] <FinboySlick> I sort of top at 2.5 amps anyway so I'll have to look for a stronger supply later.

[01:54:36] <FinboySlick> Oh wow, it's up to 20 amps... Gonna have to rethink my plans.
[01:54:59] <Tom_itx> heh
[01:55:17] <FinboySlick> Thought I could test with a little wall wart.
[01:55:54] <Tom_itx> test it with a car battery
[01:56:18] <FinboySlick> The plan is called: "Operation startled frenchman."
[01:56:28] <FinboySlick> Comming soon to a youtube near you.
[01:57:00] <FinboySlick> It's the hiding a car battery under his desk bit that I'm concerned about.
[01:57:59] -!- uw has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[01:58:21] <FinboySlick> Tom_itx: You think a typical USB port would be enough to excite a 30A automotive-type relay?
[01:58:48] <FinboySlick> Or will I have to add 5v relay to start the 12v relay?
[02:00:44] -!- Valen has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[02:06:31] <FinboySlick> Oooh, power drill battery!
[02:06:54] <FinboySlick> OK, I'm set for a power source.
[02:08:23] -!- crank [crank!~crank@shell.tuxshells.com] has joined #linuxcnc
[02:10:40] <Tom_itx> no USB is not enough
[02:11:21] <Tom_itx> 100ma without asking permission then you get 400ma iirc maybe 500ma
[02:12:01] <FinboySlick> That wouldn't excite the relay?
[02:13:01] <FinboySlick> Hmmm, I think I have a 5v driven SSR here, I could use that to trigger the 12v magnetic relay I guess.
[02:13:05] <Tom_itx> not a 12v relay

[12:36:31] <gonzo_> I'm waiting for a 7i90. But it's a new product
[12:38:33] <kengu> is there a step by step howto on mesacards from 0 to working machine
[12:38:45] <kengu> there are bit and pieces all over the web but
[12:39:07] <kengu> https://sites.google.com/site/andrewscnc/home/mesa5i25 http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Mesa_Cards

[12:45:10] <skunkworks> gonzo_, why the 7i90?
[12:47:07] <gonzo_> don't want to use an inboard fpga bard and have all the long wiring picking up noise. And I just don't trust USB
[12:47:23] <gonzo_> so the pll port option looked the best bet.
[12:47:36] <gonzo_> and it has more IO than the 7i43
[12:48:30] <skunkworks> ah
[12:49:06] <skunkworks> the 7i80 is getting there also... mesa has some pretty cool stuff.
[12:49:24] <gonzo_> that's the LAN version?
[12:49:27] <skunkworks> yes
[12:49:45] <MacGalempsy> well damn, I cannot seem to get this drive to connect to the software...
[12:50:08] <skunkworks> gonzo_, http://www.electronicsam.com/images/KandT/testing/LaptopRTnet.jpg
[12:50:12] <MacGalempsy> but I did find the obsolete touchpad on ebay, so hopefully that will work...
[12:51:11] <gonzo_> skunkworks, I did look at that. But there is another linuxcn'er locally, using the 43 with pll drive. So I knew that option works. (and can ask for assist when i get stuck)
[12:51:48] <Jymmm> skunkworks wth is that?
[12:52:18] <skunkworks> Jymmm, mesa wizardry...
[12:52:31] <Jymmm> skunkworks: is that the ether board?
[12:52:44] <skunkworks> my laptop running xenomai realtime - connected through rtnet to a mesa 7i80
[12:53:43] <Jymmm> Hmmmmm
[12:53:58] <gonzo_> what's the latency like?
[12:53:59] <Jymmm> I thought there were still issues with the driver?
[12:54:01] <skunkworks> the led was flashing... I swear
[12:54:20] <skunkworks> there is - they are working on it. but it seems to work..
[12:54:39] <skunkworks> that laptop seems to have <20us latency
[12:54:46] <skunkworks> a fluke.
[12:54:53] <Jymmm> skunkworks: "No animated GIF (or panduit), IT NEVER HAPPENED!!!" ;)
[12:55:06] <skunkworks> :)
[12:55:39] <Jymmm> skunkworks: Is pc latency still an issue?
[12:55:51] <skunkworks> Jymmm, yes
[12:56:02] <skunkworks> it doesn't offload motion to the board..
[12:56:07] <Jymmm> skunkworks: I thought that was the whole purpose of the mesa cards
[12:56:21] <skunkworks> latency isn'
[12:56:30] <Jymmm> ???
[12:57:04] <skunkworks> latency isn't as big as an issue using mesa boards. but it still needs to be <50us-ish at the most
[12:57:05] <Jymmm> skunkworks: I'm confused
[12:57:15] <Jymmm> ah
[12:57:54] <skunkworks> Jymmm, isn
[12:57:58] <skunkworks> jeexe
[12:58:14] <skunkworks> Jymmm, isn't it like 5:00 where you are?
[12:58:17] <skunkworks> do you ever sleep?
[12:58:23] <Jymmm> skunkworks: It seems that the linxcnc core need to be offloaded to HW, and just use a PC for the front end gui stuff
[12:58:48] <Jymmm> or motion as you put it
[12:58:51] <skunkworks> I know that is what some people would like. (and may be working on it)
[12:58:58] <Jymmm> ah

This thing was used in a shop where they built the shaper table into a large cabinet so they removed the lower sheetmetal box from the shaper machine and installed the guts and table top into their large wood table so they could do really large pieces like staircase railings.
[14:28:20] <PetefromTn> I got it for $75.00 and it runs good and looks good. Just need to build a cabinet box to make it back into a floor standing model before I can use it. I think it is like 5hp and 10k RPM. 3/4 spindle shaft with removable arbor so i can probably get or machine some new arbors to use 1 1/4 and router bits..

[16:01:45] <archivist_herron> good fitting screw driver, plastic sticks after a long time may need some force, cap direction is mentioned for assembly so the reverse
[16:02:22] <archivist_herron> and it has click so will be hard to start rotating anti clockwise
[16:03:01] <PetefromTn> I know it must seem pretty silly to not be able to take it apart but believe me I have tried several times now and I just don't wanna break the damn thing before I even get to use it.
[16:04:49] <archivist_herron> I know what you mean. had fun over the years trying to get into things to repair them
[16:06:48] <kwallace> I would tend to gently put a blade in the seem between the base plate and housing, then a small jeweler's screw driver between the tip of a finger and the base. Pry the screw driver to open the finger and the blade should open the seem enough to keep the finger from closing again. Then do the other three fingers.

That is actually how they are in the pictures and in reality but the base plate I am talking about is kinda inside the cap nowhere near the finger tips.
[16:17:18] <kwallace> My guess is that you aren't meant to take the rest apart. You need a base plate to mount the bit you have.

[20:07:08] <PetefromTn> Just had a guy come over to try to fix my Acer Laptop....unfortunately he HAD to take it with him. I told him to call me before the price gets too high. I normally fix my own computers and stuff but that laptop was difficult to get apart to see what was wrong with it. Hopefully he can get it sorted so it can be my portable meet with customers type of computer againLOL
[20:16:35] <skunkworks> PetefromTn, what where the symptoms?
[20:19:39] <PetefromTn> Well it used to get pretty hot around the exhaust fan area and then it started to shut down on me if I used it too long. Then after doing that a few times it would not start again. I tried to fix it some but never could get the damn thing apart too well. Tons of clips and screws everywhere LOL. he told me that it might be a CMOS thermal overload setting tripped and that required removal and replacement of the Cmos battery
[20:19:39] <PetefromTn> and SOMETIMES that will fix it. If not it might be a power input problem with the ac or a motherboard. I am hoping it is something stupid and I can get it back under $100.00. He seemed to think it was a 60-70% chance..
[20:20:24] <PetefromTn> Honestly it is not that old. It has a dual core intel processor and windows 7 with 4 gigs ram onboard and a 17.3" monitor which I really enjoyed.
[20:21:32] <jdh> Acer wouldn't be a brand I woudl pick

[23:52:28] <PCW> MacGalempsy: not running linuxcnc?
[23:52:32] <rob_h> how many Nm u need?
[23:52:59] <MacGalempsy> yes trying to
[23:53:12] <rob_h> 200v or 400v 3phase
[23:53:30] <PCW> linuxcnc needs to be running to run halcmd
[23:53:30] <jthornton> I'm not sure for this application, but low power similar to nema 23 stepper size
[23:53:40] <jthornton> 120v single phase is best
[23:54:28] <andypugh> PCW: The multimeter shows 0.3 to 19V swing on inputs 0 1 and 2 of the 7i76, but I am not seeing any change in the HAL pin values. I wonder what the problem might be?
[23:55:24] <PCW> possibly you have the encoder option enabled?
[23:55:32] <CaptHindsight> andypugh: what brand were those AC servos you found? ~nema23 2-4Nm
