[09:22:50] <trixter> what tools do people use for 2.5D profiling? The one I have isnt working well and I was looking for something else. The problem I am having is with rounded surfaces, think of a sphere I want it to profile a circle but getting it to operate on that edge point at the equator is not working
[09:24:03] <trixter> oh I should specify milling
[09:31:36] <archivist> when you say not working well what do you mean
[09:33:02] <Tom_itx> 2.5d cad cam doesn't do 3d very well if at all
[09:33:41] <Tom_itx> it will do height but not surfaces
[09:35:12] <archivist> are you using the right type of end mill and fine enough setting in the cam program

[10:01:10] <trixter> I dont know if anything I said made it or not, but I realize 2.5D profiling doesnt do 3d well, its not intended to. The point is to save time and tool wear by not milling out a bunch of stuff you dont need (at least in my use). It is to cut an outline around the part so the part will fall free when I am finished with it.
[10:02:32] <trixter> but the software I am using only wants to select flat surfaces for profiling. Why I gave the example of a sphere, if you did a profile cut around that it would just be a circle, the size of the equator, which would then be milled further.
[10:02:37] -!- cncbasher [cncbasher!~quassel@cpc15-hart9-2-0-cust101.11-3.cable.virginmedia.com] has joined #linuxcnc
[10:04:02] <trixter> I know you can export a 3d model to a 2d image and import that into vcarve which will do it, although I would rather avoid buying more software if I can, why I asked what others use for 2.5D profiling. based on youtube videos and other things I dont think a lot of people do profiling to save time and tool wear though
