[00:06:38] <Tom_itx> go to ACE hardware if you want onezies and twozies. fastenal sells bulk
[00:08:32] <Jymmm> Yeah, ACE had all kinds of funky hardware in EACH qty
[00:09:01] <Tom_itx> it's ALL overpriced anymore but they usually have it

[00:11:05] <r00t4rd3d> he sells those for 2k
[00:11:13] <r00t4rd3d> http://www.woodthatworks.com/
[00:14:07] <tjb1> Wonder how many times he cut those so they didnt hit
[00:14:28] <Tom_itx> measure twice, cut once

[00:22:42] <r00t4rd3d> How come the dimensions shown in the preview window of LinuxCNC never match what I set the material dimensions too in my cam program?
[00:25:04] <jdh> they should be off by the radius on each side
[00:25:23] <r00t4rd3d> its always less
[00:25:39] <Tom_itx> cutter center?
[00:25:41] <r00t4rd3d> i set 5x5 it shows as 4.09 or some shit in lxcnc
[00:26:02] <jdh> that is teh material size, or the max cut size?
[00:26:03] <Tom_itx> the preview is for a tool path
[00:26:11] <Tom_itx> a tool path will be the cutter center
[00:26:28] <Tom_itx> add or subtract the tool radius and see if that makes a difference
[00:26:59] <jdh> linuxcnc doesn't know or care what size your material is.
[00:27:08] <Tom_itx> i care
[00:27:11] <r00t4rd3d> me too
[00:27:16] <Tom_itx> but not about yours
[00:27:19] <r00t4rd3d> its a pain to center stuff
[00:27:27] <Tom_itx> no it isn't
[00:27:47] <Tom_itx> you do it in your cad program and set your G54 offset to x y z zero from that
[00:28:58] <Tom_itx> sometimes we would use a tooling ball as the coordinate zero
[00:29:22] <Tom_itx> so long as you have a common reference point
[00:42:07] <tjb1> r00t4rd3d has got too many common reference points for a good reference point.

[04:28:15] <mhaberler> what do you mean by 'peculiar result'?
[04:30:25] <ursa> I'm trying to get a spindle on signal, but when I change the pin assignment in stepconf for pin 1, I get nothing.
[04:31:00] <ursa> However, pin 17, which is marked amplifier enable does give me the spindle on/off signals. If I change the assignment to spindle on, I get nothing.
[04:31:36] <mhaberler> I am sorry - I have never used stepconfg
[04:32:03] <ursa> unfortunate. I suppose I'll survive anyway <grin>

[07:05:04] <ursa> Looking for help changing pinout of parallel port with stepconf. Can anyone help?
[07:12:24] <archivist> ask the real question, not can we help in irc
[07:14:12] <ursa> Stepconf is not changing the pinout the way expected--I ask for spindle on on a particular pin and get nothing.
[07:14:26] <ursa> I find the spindle on signal on amplifier enabled
[07:14:35] <ursa> Any way to fix this up?
[07:19:28] <archivist> which pin number?
[07:20:02] <ursa> pin 17 is given as amplifier enabled, and that is where I find the spindl-on signal.

[07:26:37] <ursa> and if it helps, when I leave estop on pin 1, I get the expected signals.
[07:27:07] <archivist> there is no "spindle on" on the version I have here, I assume you have a later version
[07:27:36] <ursa> One sec. I'll check the version.
[07:27:56] <ursa> I have 2.5.0
[07:31:09] <ursa> I can live with what I am getting, but it would be nice to have stepconf indicate the correct signal. Not that big a deal, just an annoyance.

[21:20:00] <Guest19554> but i'am not sure of this
[21:22:01] <andypugh> You don't need a Z pulse.
[21:22:18] <andypugh> For DRO use it is 100% optional.
[21:22:19] <Guest19554> I cannot understand the principles, In my opinion the encoder should have something on the magnetic stripe that indicates to the DRO the presence of an index pulse..

[21:24:11] <Guest19554> I use the encoder to close the loop on linuxcnc....
[21:24:14] <andypugh> For use with LinuxCNC you would need to add homing switches (you would even need these in the case of a periodic index pulse)

[21:25:07] <andypugh> I am not saying that there are not any index pulses, I am just saying that there might not be. However, if you have a wire for Z then perhaps there ought to be,
[21:25:18] <andypugh> Maybe it is only on one end of the tape?
[21:25:29] <andypugh> Does the manual mention anything?
[21:25:49] <Guest19554> ok.. I was thinking that with the encoder the homing switches will be not necessary
[21:26:18] <Guest19554> the tape has been cut with a pair of common scissor......
[21:27:16] <andypugh> If you had more than one index in your random length, or zero, then you would need a switch.
[21:27:34] <Guest19554> the manual describes very well the installation process but do not provide info on the functionality of the encoder
[21:27:43] <andypugh> It would have to be quite a specific tape to only have one index in just the right place.
[21:28:15] <Guest19554> ok, so I think I need to reinstall my inductive sensor...
[21:29:27] <andypugh> Anything like this? http://www.machine-dro.co.uk/magnetic-linear-encoder-reading-head-25-micron-resolution.html
[21:30:31] <andypugh> Do you have the scale attached to LinuxCNC already?

[21:33:16] <andypugh> (I am in the UK too)
[21:33:34] <Guest19554> the encoder manual talks about z index
[21:33:55] <Guest19554> so I think the encoder is able to read an index pulse
[21:34:06] <andypugh> Ah, well, I guess you need to find how many there are then :-)

[21:50:49] <Guest19554> well, it was not that automatic :) I have two axes, X and Y. [21:58:59] <Guest19554> ok, another second ;)
[21:59:35] <PCW> if the encoder reads the correct direction you may want to change the sign of the stepgen scale instead

[22:01:51] <PCW> wouldn't the encoder scale be 200? (5u = 200 counts/mm)
[22:02:55] <Guest19554> yep, setting it to 200 seems to do a better job! at least in distance proportions
[22:03:46] <PCW> then the stepgen scale needs to match (steps/mm)
[22:04:45] <Guest19554> yep, setting it to 200 seems to do a better job! at least in distance proportions
[22:04:55] <Guest19554> and it makes sense... :D

[22:06:21] <PCW> do you have the feedback direction correct? that is does it eventually stop?
[22:06:37] <Guest19554> with correct scale it stops now
[22:06:52] <PCW> and you can jog it around?
[22:07:23] <Guest19554> we're taking measures with a probe scanner, to figure out if it actually moves by 5mm (for example)
[22:07:35] <Guest19554> seems to be able to jog
[22:09:21] <Guest19554> the measure seems to be accurate (at least, for probe's precision)!!
[22:09:34] <PCW> so that 90% of the problem If you can increase your ustep ratio in the drive you may do better accuracy wise
[22:09:35] <PCW> (so there are more than 200 usteps/mm)
[22:09:58] <Guest19554> in fact, I have microstepping at 32 times
[22:10:28] <PCW> so how many steps/mm is that?
[22:10:30] <Guest19554> now, can you briefly explain how the FF and PID parameters have to be tuned?
[22:10:38] <Guest19554> 200
[22:10:50] <PCW> the same?
[22:11:04] <PCW> more would be better
[22:14:38] <PCW> YOu have what amount to an almost perfect velocity mode drive so
[22:14:40] <PCW> if the PID input and outputs are the same units (+- a d/dt)
[22:14:41] <PCW> FF1 should be 1 (and its should actually work pretty well with only FF1

[22:17:50] <Guest19554> yes, the motor scale is 256
[22:18:19] <Guest19554> the compensation movments are too slow though
[22:18:23] <PCW> as long as that right then FF1 = 1 is right
[22:18:53] <Guest19554> 256 is the best value reached by intensive tests on our stepper motor
[22:19:36] <Guest19554> but what is the real significate of ffo ff1 and ff2?

[22:23:20] <PCW> based

[22:30:36] <PCW> if it does not move to very close the the right locatiions with p=0, you have

[23:30:45] <Valen> lower end ones may just have a hf start then go to straight AC
[23:31:02] <Valen> better ones will overlay some HF on the arc to stabilise it
[23:31:36] <PCW> It really depends on the mechanical resonant frequency of your "plant"

[23:51:23] <ve7it> HF start really pisses off the ham radio guys
[23:51:48] <Valen> then after welding for 20 seconds, tap the button to knock 30% of the power off both parts of the cycle because the Al is now hot lol
[23:51:59] <JT-Shop> easier for me to just grab the spool gun on the 212 and fire away
[23:52:00] <Valen> all while welding, its great lol
[23:52:38] * Valen wagers he gets better penetration in the 15mm thick Al he was welding
[23:53:15] * JT-Shop won't bet cause he don't weld Al very often
[23:53:32] <Valen> ve7it: the HF start on ours is super potent lol
[23:53:34] <pfred1> there is actually aluminum solder that works pretty good
[23:54:05] <Valen> i accidentally hit it while changing a tungsten and it jumped about 8CM, into my left hand
[23:54:25] <Valen> earthing out through my crotch which was thankfully in full contact with the welding bench
[23:55:13] <Valen> i got a weirdass burn thing through the welding glove and a patch of skin the size of a 20c piece came off my finger
[23:55:25] <Valen> like it wasn't burnt, it just all fell off
[23:55:39] <ve7it> yea, the HF start basically adds a tesla coil output to the electrode

[23:56:27] <ve7it> an RF burn... they are nasty, but usually very shallow damage
[23:56:41] <Valen> didnt hurt so I'm ok with it
[23:56:49] <Valen> hurt like a bitch and a half when it happened
[23:57:17] <Valen> I've been electrocuted with 240v more than once but the hf start was the worst lol
[23:57:44] <pfred1> frequency makes electricity more agressive
[23:57:46] <skunkworks> wow - my laptop actually lasted 2.5 hours on its old battery with 12.04
[23:58:08] <Valen> I don't think it was a RF burn

[23:58:20] <Valen> the HF is just like a rapid spark
[23:58:39] <Valen> guessing like 300hz or so

[23:59:04] <ve7it> http://www3.telus.net/public/a5a26316/WelderPDFs_Pics/dbARC_START.pdf primative, but effective HF start box... HF start is around 1Mhz, so it tends to travel over the surface of the skin instead of through your body
[23:59:17] <Valen> well thats not the one i have lol
