[02:01:37] <seb_kuzminsky> are you guys advocating breaking master because you think it will spur... someone? into fixing it? (i'm not trying to be grumpy or argumentative, i only want to understand your motivations)
[02:04:47] <seb_kuzminsky> andypugh: in http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?UpdatingConfigurationsForDevelopmentVersions, it says the pin hm2_5i23.0.8i20.0.0.amp-enable was deleted - is the 8i20 just always enabled now?
[02:04:51] <seb_kuzminsky> (oh, he left)

[02:12:09] amnesic_ is now known as amnesic
[02:16:37] <seb_kuzminsky> heh, we now have a pin called "hm2_5i25.0.8i20.0.1.fault.no-enable-not"
[02:17:52] <seb_kuzminsky> ok, i think http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?UpdatingTo2.6 has all the content it needs, did i miss anything?
[02:20:06] <skunkworks_> nice!
[02:21:16] -!- GuShH_ has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[02:21:44] <cradek> yay that's nice progress
[02:24:50] <cradek> seb_kuzminsky: that's a fair question. a branch can spend a very long time in the state where people have stopped really working on it, but every time you actually try to use it for something real, you find some other little thing wrong with it. I think ja4 is in that state now, and maybe has been for years, and it would be nice if early in this next cycle, people used it by default. I think (to finally answer your question) ...
[02:24:56] <cradek> ... things would shake out, and yes, it might cause a bit of motivation. There's always 2.6 for people who want something stable during the shakeout.
[02:28:14] <cradek> it is sure true, on the other hand, that people can get motivated and do the shakeout on the branch. but they don't seem to do that. WHY that's the case is more a PR or psychology question than a technical question, I think, and I don't know the answer.
[02:30:00] <seb_kuzminsky> it's probably true that merging nearly-finished things hastens detection of the lingering issues
[02:31:37] <seb_kuzminsky> the balance i'm unsure about, and worried about, is that if master doesn't work, testers will go to the stable branches, and we'll loose the eyeballs that are necessary but not sufficient for stabilizing master
[02:34:53] <skunkworks_> well - if it is anyting like the new tp.. all you need is just a couple people... :)
[02:36:09] -!- garfong has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[02:38:04] -!- dybskiy has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[02:39:09] <seb_kuzminsky> your collaboration with rob ellenberg is a wonderful example of how (imo) thinks should work - development and thurough testing on a feature branch, where it doesnt break things for other people
[02:40:21] <cradek> I'm very sympathetic to that opinion too
[02:41:22] <seb_kuzminsky> and skunkworks_ is right: "all you need is just a couple people" ;-)
[02:42:12] roh_ is now known as roh
[02:44:03] -!- AR_ has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[02:45:38] <cradek> ok we're all right... what the hell should we do?
[02:46:17] <cradek> we should wait for andy, I'd like to hear what he thinks
[02:46:54] -!- dybskiy_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[02:50:04] <cradek> goodnight, folks
[02:52:51] <seb_kuzminsky> good night cradek
[02:52:55] <skunkworks_> night!
[02:53:48] -!- XXCoder has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
[02:54:07] <seb_kuzminsky> it's clear to me people are unhappy with how i decided what to merge (aka, when to release)
[02:54:16] <seb_kuzminsky> so i'd like to try some other technique next
[02:54:44] <seb_kuzminsky> maybe someone else wants to be release manager for 2.7, or maybe we should try some other kind of governance
[02:55:56] <skunkworks_> I don't know all that went down. seem from my perspective is most people expected way too much from just a hand full of people (or you alone)
[02:57:14] <skunkworks_> because the 'work was all done!' just merge it!
[02:57:52] <seb_kuzminsky> well
[02:58:02] <seb_kuzminsky> collaborating is hard
[02:58:21] -!- dybskiy has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[02:58:25] <seb_kuzminsky> wow, cmorley is on a bug squashing rampage
[02:59:33] <cmorley> I'm late...I'm late... for a very important date... 2.5.4 release...
[03:00:04] <skunkworks_> heh
[03:00:55] <skunkworks_> working with rob was really easy.. He didn't have an issue at all with bugs. or suggestions. Very open minded
[03:01:31] <skunkworks_> I think we are down to issues with unequal axis velocities..
[03:01:39] <seb_kuzminsky> cmorley: about #294, i've never seen a stepgen spindle control before
[03:02:18] <skunkworks_> some bobs use frequency to voltage converters (instead of pwm)
[03:02:41] <skunkworks_> so stepgen in velocity mode works well for this
[03:02:50] <seb_kuzminsky> that makes sense
[03:03:14] <cmorley> yes i have not personally used one yet, but others have.
[03:03:21] <skunkworks_> (I assume that is what your talking about - I didn't look at #294)
[03:03:27] <skunkworks_> I have a bob that does this
[03:03:43] <skunkworks_> or - somepeople actually use steppers for spindles..
[03:03:45] <seb_kuzminsky> https://sourceforge.net/p/emc/bugs/294/
[03:03:48] <skunkworks_> or step-servos
[03:03:51] <cmorley> yes velocity mode stepper
[03:04:23] <seb_kuzminsky> i dont know what the OP is using for a spindle, but they report that the spindle brake stays on and their oscilloscope detects no pulses on that stepgen
[03:04:37] <skunkworks_> I have to go to bed - night!
[03:04:40] <seb_kuzminsky> pncconf configured the stepgen for velocity mode
[03:04:45] <seb_kuzminsky> seeya skunkworks_ !

[03:59:12] <asah> so to check my head rawcounts on a bldc component with an absolute encoder should always increment decrement to +- infinity, correct?
[03:59:25] <asah> commutation is modded off that?
[04:00:36] <asah> (really an andy pugh question)
[04:03:13] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah that's one for andy...
[04:05:17] <asah> seems broken in the ssi interface, but I may be doing something stoopid.
[04:08:28] -!- pjm_ has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[04:08:41] <seb_kuzminsky> i'd think the rawcounts would increment and decrement to the limits of the data type, which i assume is signed 32-bit integer
[04:09:53] <asah> right. true. I really mean it shouldnt reset to 0 if the absolute encoder rolls past 1.0 (or counts-per-rev)
[04:11:55] <seb_kuzminsky> looking at the hostmot2(9) manpage, it seems like there are two kinds of ssi encoders, regular and "split", and the split kind maybe reverts to 0 after one revolution?
[04:12:02] <seb_kuzminsky> i really don't know
[04:12:43] <seb_kuzminsky> grump, "git push" doesn't push tags by default

[18:39:33] -!- skunkworks_ [skunkworks_!~chatzilla@68-115-41-210.static.eucl.wi.charter.com] has joined #linuxcnc-devel

[18:43:19] -!- c-bob has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[18:45:25] <asah> so the problem now with my bldc commutation seems to be that I can really only electrically commutate from one electrical pole to another.
[18:46:05] <asah> ie with a 6 pole motor, I get only really .16 of a phase swing if I push a triangle wave into the value of the bldc comp.
[18:46:33] <asah> I cannot jump into the next “valley” of phase.
[18:46:38] <asah> or pole.
[18:47:37] <asah> if I disconnect one of the phases from the motor I get what I would expect, motor spins up to speed (many turns) then slows down, reverses, etc back and forth.
[18:48:25] -!- syyl_ws has quit [Quit: Verlassend]
[18:49:07] <asah> seems that the electrical angle is off, but having a hard time pinning it down.
[18:49:55] <pcw_home> the bldc phase angle needa to go from 0 to 1 for one electrical rotation
[18:50:00] <pcw_home> needs
[18:52:44] <asah> right, so I have encoder.rawcounts hooked in to bldc.1.rawcounts and scale set to the number of counts per revolution.
[18:53:19] <pcw_home> and bldc.n.poles = 6
[18:54:01] <asah> yes
[18:54:07] <pcw_home> (6 poles means 3 detent positions if you apply a small DC current to the motor windings)
[18:54:07] -!- kwallace [kwallace!~kwallace@smb-188.sonnet.com] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[18:54:29] <asah> yes
[18:54:54] <asah> so I put current between two windings as we discussed, then zeroed out the encoder
[18:54:58] <asah> (in hardware)

[18:55:27] <pcw_home> so if thats all correct, encoder direction is a possibility
[18:56:21] <pcw_home> fix with negative bldc.n.scale (I think)

[19:02:16] <seb_kuzminsky> skunkworks_: wlo = www.linuxcnc.org
[19:02:26] <seb_kuzminsky> we also say glo for git.linuxcnc.org sometimes
[19:02:53] <asah> bldc.n.scale negative gave me better results. totally different results from bldc.n.rev which is lame IMHO
[19:02:57] <asah> =)
[19:03:21] <skunkworks> seb_kuzminsky, ah. makes sense
[19:03:44] <asah> but in this absolute case bldc.1.value is a velocity input correct? if I am setup with absolute encoders?
[19:04:34] <pcw_home> bldc1.value is a voltage value for bare HBridges
[19:04:44] <pcw_home> so ~= velocity
[19:05:07] <asah> right.
[19:05:41] <asah> ok. so then why is it only spinning in one direction now even though value is pos and neg.
[19:07:48] <pcw_home> so the offset setting is not correct somehow
[19:07:55] <asah> its at zero
[19:08:14] -!- shaun413 has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
[19:08:48] <pcw_home> I mean the encoder/rotor alignment is not as expected
[19:09:03] <asah> ah. ok.
[19:09:08] <asah> ill play with that some.
[19:09:33] <asah> prob off by half a phase or something? play with lead-angle?
[19:09:36] <pcw_home> it should spin at the same speed in both directions with equal +- voltages if that is correct
[19:09:53] <pcw_home> possibly 90 degrees off
[19:10:13] <asah> yes it was.
[19:10:43] <pcw_home> well possibly anything...
[19:11:03] -!- balestrino has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[19:11:17] <asah> meaning, now it works. =)
[19:11:23] <asah> I was at 180, 90 is correct
[19:11:25] <asah> yay!
[19:11:29] <asah> thanks peter
[19:11:48] <pcw_home> well that was "easy" :-)
[19:12:10] <asah> yeah. I was making the dumb assumption that bldc.1.rev actually reversed it
[19:12:20] <asah> user error always.
[19:12:33] <pcw_home> I'm not even sure what that is
[19:12:50] -!- skunkworks_ has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
[19:13:49] <asah> pcw_home it looks like the SSI stuff is not doing any velocity calculations
[19:14:31] <pcw_home> # ofpoles, encoder scaling, motor UVW vs encoder direction and offset all have to be right... lots or error space
[19:15:37] <asah> yes indeed.
[19:15:54] <pcw_home> Im not sure if the absolute encoders have velocity pins or not
[19:15:55] <asah> and little old me wandering around in all those dimensions.
[19:16:32] <asah> they don’t. I had to hack the driver code to get stable absolute out. hacking it now to add velocity calcs in, but its rather involved (stealing from encoder.c)
[19:16:50] <pcw_home> Um not needed
[19:17:05] <pcw_home> DDT of position is velocity
[19:17:12] <pcw_home> (PID does this)
[19:18:05] <pcw_home> I mean PID does this for the D term for example

[19:19:59] <skunkworks> yay!
[19:20:16] <pcw_home> for quadrature encoders where you get instant position updates you can timestamp the velocity estimation makes sense
[19:20:18] <pcw_home> but for absolute encoders that are periodically sampled you can do no better than D/DT of position
[19:21:01] <asah> but isn’t the point of the vel calcs in the driver that they happen at high rate in the fpga, not in the driver?
[19:21:52] * seb_kuzminsky crosses fingers & looks sideways at the buildbot
[19:22:05] <cradek> haha
[19:23:27] <pcw_home> the quadrature encoder time stamp is high speed (= better time resolution)
[19:23:28] <pcw_home> but timestamping the absolute data is not helpful
[19:23:55] <pcw_home> because there are no updates between servo thread periods
[19:25:45] <asah> ah. right. ok. Well, another good reason for softdmc ? =) (ducks)
[19:28:27] <pcw_home> well basically its a good reason for absolute encoders to have all the resolution possible
[19:29:59] <seb_kuzminsky> wow, there's some good stuff in 2.5.4

[19:36:10] <seb_kuzminsky> at some point soon we should as a group talk about plans & hopes for 2.7
[19:36:22] <seb_kuzminsky> one of my hopes is that 2.7 will be released in 2014
[19:36:48] <cradek> I have three weeks of vacation to use before july... we should have a hackfest.

[19:38:57] <cradek> yes we all seem to really want that
[19:39:27] <seb_kuzminsky> i really want to add more automated tests to master to verify all the important functionality that ja monkeys with, and see what breaks
[19:40:19] <cradek> that sounds extremely hard
[19:40:45] <seb_kuzminsky> some of it's easy low-hanging fruit - things like the jogwheel
[19:40:56] <seb_kuzminsky> some of it's hard - nml messages across module interfaces :-(
[19:41:30] -!- skunkworks has quit [Quit: Leaving]
[19:44:13] <cradek> I don't think any of it's low fruit. all the jogwheel pin names changed. a test can't work both pre- and post-merge.

[19:46:37] <pcw_home> wasn't an include option added to hal file processing?
[19:47:05] <seb_kuzminsky> pcw_home: in 2.6, not 2.5
[19:47:09] <cradek> yes in 2.6
[19:47:23] <pcw_home> OK

[19:51:25] <pcw_home> Thats very nice
[19:51:26] <pcw_home> I think it would be nice a macro pre-processor for hal files so you could do site
[19:51:28] <pcw_home> specific/generic name mapping so the connection structure can be separated
[19:51:29] <pcw_home> entirely from the names
[19:52:29] <cradek> unfortunately long ago we made the classic mistake of inventing our own scripting language (halcmd) instead of using an existing language
[19:52:44] <cradek> this is a mistake lots of people make
[19:53:34] <seb_kuzminsky> i've often wanted hal configuration done by a python script instead of a halcmd script
[19:53:43] <pcw_home> Yeah
[19:54:22] <seb_kuzminsky> you can do it that way, it's just not very convenient (or documented)
[19:54:23] <pcw_home> The ini file substitutions are partway there...
[19:54:30] <seb_kuzminsky> yeah
[19:55:00] <pcw_home> but no help for signals
[19:55:59] <seb_kuzminsky> and no conditionals
[19:56:07] <cradek> bleh
[19:56:22] <cradek> and no math
[19:56:43] <seb_kuzminsky> i'd love it if you could say 'try to load this component, and if that worked, hook it up to these nets'
[19:57:06] <pcw_home> Yes the no math is painful sometimes
[19:57:46] <cradek> it's all the same problem (we didn't use a programming language)
[19:59:16] <cradek> pre-ken I used to sometimes preprocess gcode with m4
