[04:59:34] <memleak> Hello all!
[05:00:02] <memleak> mhaberler: You asked about my runtests results -> http://dpaste.com/1065810/
[05:00:52] <memleak> Here is my updated dmesg as well: http://dpaste.com/1065812/
[05:01:54] <mhaberler> ok, now go into the dirs of the failed runtests and look at the stderr file, this should give a clue
[05:02:26] <mhaberler> common cause of failure: a DISPLAY environment variable is set causing linuxcnc startup issues for those tests which do
[05:02:53] <mhaberler> second, a lock file: /tmp/linuxcnc.lock blocking linuxcnc startup
[05:03:03] <memleak> My latency is great btw with PREEMPT RT! 6,417ns jitter on servo thread, 10,232ns jitter on base :)
[05:03:37] <mhaberler> my setup does an infinite loop in 3,28 uSeconds
[05:04:05] <memleak> Maybe I mean useconds..
[05:04:20] <mhaberler> sounds more like it
[05:04:31] <mhaberler> ns would be a tad macho
[05:07:17] <memleak> These stderr files are very informative surprisingly!
[05:07:55] <memleak> nc: command not found ?
[05:08:04] <memleak> ncurses perhaps?
[05:08:39] <zultron> netcat
[05:09:16] <mhaberler> missing install dependency
[05:09:23] <memleak> Ah only 8 tests failed this time around after fixing a few things :)
[05:09:24] <zultron> norton commander
[05:09:46] <zultron> no comment
[05:10:12] <memleak> It better not be norton commander... :P
[05:10:54] <zultron> you can eliminate norton commander by installing it and seeing if that fixes the errors
[05:11:59] <memleak> mhaberler, did you fix the thread issue in EMC or was my kernel just bad?
[05:12:18] <mhaberler> which thread issue ? you had a broken kconfig
[05:12:35] <mhaberler> I did verify this - need to read back
[05:12:55] <memleak> the clock period unable to make thread fast
[05:13:01] -!- tmcw has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[05:13:49] <memleak> My kernel was broken and I was aware of that in advance, but I also ran git pull and noticed some code changes in EMC. Thing is, I did a kernel recompilation and a git pull on EMC at the same time so I don't know what exactly fixed the issue from before.
[05:14:15] <mhaberler> I did not fix anything because there wasnt anything broken there
[05:14:31] <memleak> So it _WAS_ just my kernel, yes?
[05:14:55] <mhaberler> yes it was
[05:15:13] <mhaberler> btw: you failed to state that you had a self-built kernel to start with
[05:15:30] <mhaberler> I only inferred that from dmesg
[05:15:51] <memleak> I figured stating I use gentoo implied that I compiled my own kernel. Gentoo doesn't offer pre-built ones.
[05:15:56] <mhaberler> this is why I insisted you first reproduce with the wheezy rt kernel
[05:16:16] <zultron> gentoo doesn't provide a generic kernel config?
[05:16:16] <mhaberler> no, you cant assume that everybody is familiar with distro esoterics
[05:17:01] <mhaberler> whoa whoa, an excellent source of problems
[05:17:27] <memleak> I was horsing around a lot in the kernel config with many options I never touch, mainly for disastrous reasons, just to see what would happen. jepler insisted that whatever the issue was, was not kernel related, so I went along with it.
[05:17:55] <mhaberler> aha. Next time you'd want to share that little secret before asking for other folk's time
[05:18:12] <memleak> I mentioned it several times.
[05:18:30] <mhaberler> well by now we know you do these kind of things ;)
[05:18:47] <memleak> "Your crazy kernel config has nothing to do with this issue! Don't worry about it! :D"
[05:19:15] <mhaberler> sometimes opinions disagree, which is why it helps to start from a reference base know to work
[05:19:48] <memleak> After installing netcat, the linuxcncrsh test hangs.
[05:20:09] <memleak> It's been here for like 10 minutes now..
[05:20:27] <memleak> http://dpaste.com/1065827/
[05:20:33] <mhaberler> then debug it - turn on the linuxcnc log, look at the logfile, use gdb, whatever it takes
[05:20:36] <mhaberler> some of these tests _are_ slow
[05:22:24] <memleak> even on a 2.8 GHz quad core CPU?
[05:22:52] <mhaberler> I did not say they are cpu bound
[05:23:28] <memleak> gcode-output: No such file or directory for the linuxcncrsh test
[05:24:41] <mhaberler> can we return to my initial suggestion: verify what you are doing with the wheezy rt-preempt kernel and go from there once that is known to work?
[05:25:28] -!- vax- has quit [*.net *.split]
[05:25:28] -!- linlin has quit [*.net *.split]

[05:25:29] -!- postaL has quit [*.net *.split]
[05:28:25] -!- generic_nick has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[05:29:11] <memleak> I mean everything is working so far, just the error about gcode in a test
[05:29:34] <mhaberler> you mean you have 1 runtests failure?
[05:30:13] <memleak> 3
[05:30:19] <mhaberler> so what are these
[05:30:33] <mhaberler> and what do the stderr logs of the other two say
[05:30:53] <memleak> same error as linuxcncrsh
[05:31:09] <mhaberler> meaning 'no gcode output'?
[05:32:52] <memleak> One moment, those tests are working now for some reason.
[05:33:59] <mhaberler> it might have been the /tmp/linuxcnc.lock issue, that has bitten me before too
[05:34:28] <mhaberler> robustness patches for runtests are definitely welcome
[05:34:32] <memleak> yeah they're all passing!
[05:34:33] <memleak> :D
[05:34:44] <mhaberler> now that's a result, you're off to the races
[05:34:48] <mhaberler> congratulations!
[05:34:55] <memleak> Thank you :D
[05:34:58] <mhaberler> sure
[05:35:58] <memleak> A simple fix for the lock issue could just be as easy as a carefully timed rm -rf command
[05:37:26] <mhaberler> well you definitely want to determine if an instance is running before doing that
[05:37:40] <memleak> hence the "carefully timed" part ;)
[05:38:09] <mhaberler> so either fail the test with a clear error message, or do the right thing depending whether an instance is running or not; detecting that might be tricky
[05:38:34] <memleak> wouldn't it show up in either /sys, /proc, top or a real time thread?
[05:39:00] <mhaberler> well you have several scenarios atm, and there istn one test which covers all of them
[05:39:09] <mhaberler> userland: test for shm segments
[05:39:18] <mhaberler> kernel: look at /proc/rtapi for rtapi
[05:39:23] <mhaberler> rtai I mean
[05:39:53] <mhaberler> xeno-kernel, which nobody uses, look at /proc/xenomai/heap
[05:40:27] <memleak> See, you got it!
[05:40:36] <mhaberler> that probably should be a function in scripts/linuxcnc.in
[05:40:44] <mhaberler> I am glade you volunteered ;)
[05:41:00] -!- Loetmichel has quit []
[05:42:07] <memleak> I'm sure it'll be easy for you to add those kinds of checks considering you memorized all of that off the top of your head.
[05:46:42] <memleak> http://dpaste.com/1065857/ EMC launches and the demo sim runs. This is kernel related, yes?
[05:47:01] <mhaberler> nope, it isnt
[05:47:38] <memleak> http://dpaste.com/1065860/
[05:48:10] <memleak> Where does that problem occur in then?
[05:49:20] <mhaberler> motion
[05:49:50] <memleak> I don't have a motion controller though... Nothing is hooked up..
[05:50:33] <mhaberler> the module is called motmod
[05:51:48] <memleak> ah: /home/ntu/devel/linuxcnc/bin/rtapi_app: symbol lookup error: /home/ntu/devel/linuxcnc/rtlib/motmod.so: undefined symbol: kinematicsType
[05:53:04] <mhaberler> interesting - either your config fails to load the kinematics module, or it hasnt been built - the startup log should tell you
[05:53:58] <memleak> Where is the startup log?
[05:55:07] <mhaberler> the output which you see if you start linuxcnc from a terminal window? and also turn on DEBUG=0xFFFFFF in the ini file - but understand by now these questions should move over to #linuxcnc
[06:03:03] <memleak> mhaberler, I posted the start up log in that channel but I see nothing to do with kinematics
[06:07:28] <mhaberler> I think I have been very clear: please verify with the wheezy kernel - I have no intent to lecture on and debug custom kernel issues - sorry
[06:08:36] <memleak> So it is kernel related after all, yes?
[06:09:10] <mhaberler> I dont know - you will put in the effort to find out, not me
[06:09:52] <memleak> Ok. Do you know how fatal this issue is by any chance?
[06:09:59] <memleak> If I simply ignore it, what will happen?
[06:11:38] <mhaberler> the RT system has an undefined symbol. Consider what happens when that symbol happens to be referenced by using code. That is a question which has zero to do with LinuxCNC and I repeat: my support stops here unless you do as advised, which is all I have to say.
[06:13:14] <memleak> Can it be sid or only wheezy?
[06:14:02] <mhaberler> as I said: wheezy - but check for yourself - the debian package archives have an excellent search engine which is really easy to use
[06:14:41] <memleak> What am I looking for exactly within the search?
[06:15:00] <mhaberler> a rt preempt kernel?
[06:15:55] <memleak> RE PREEMPT kernels hit the official debian tree!?
[06:15:58] <memleak> *RT
[06:17:20] <mhaberler> http://packages.debian.org/sid/linux-image-3.2.0-4-rt-amd64
[06:17:46] <mhaberler> _yes_, which is one of the primary reasons for the whole effort to start with
[06:18:03] <memleak> I never thought I'd see a distro officially support RT systems :)
[06:18:24] <memleak> Does it count if I use that kernel with Gentoo or no?
[06:20:17] <mhaberler> I have no idea what packages you have installed - if it happens to work - fine, if not: please install a debian system - as I have done and spent two hours on just to verify that your claimed bug was not a bug but rather an environment problem. read as: I expect you to invest the same effort too before you come back with a perceived issue
[06:21:39] -!- FinboySlick has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[06:23:21] <memleak> Will do. Thanks mhaberler for your time! If I get myself really stuck on my own I'll install a debian system, but I'll spend at least a few days before I give up. I will not disturb you unless I have a debian system setup. I really appreciate your time.
[06:23:38] <mhaberler> ok
