[04:59:11] <seb_kuzm1nsky> no, it's the linuxcnc one
[04:59:24] <seb_kuzm1nsky> i didn't try rtai's tests
[04:59:31] <zultron> Oh, that's right. :) Sweet, congrats!
[04:59:42] <zultron> What're you using for the kernel .config?
[05:00:24] <seb_kuzm1nsky> i started wiht ubuntu's 3.5 config
[05:00:40] <zultron> Great! Something reproducible. :)
[05:01:36] <seb_kuzm1nsky> i checked out linux-3.5.y from kernel.org, applied the 3.5.7 patch in the rtai magma repo, copied over the .config from ubuntu's linux-image-3.5 deb, 'make oldconfig' and turn on all the rtai stuff, and it all worked pretty smoothly
[05:01:56] <seb_kuzm1nsky> some hodge-podge notes on what i did are in the Notes file at the url i posted above
[05:02:44] <seb_kuzm1nsky> ah, wait, no changes are needed to linuxcnc, i was confused (it may be time for bed)

[15:14:05] <seb_kuzm1nsky> mozmck: i'd appreciate that! the latest kernel and rtai-modules debs that i pointed to earlier are running on the buildslave right now, and in one other vm, but more testing is badly needed :-)

[15:14:29] tjb1_ is now known as tjb1
[15:15:33] <mozmck> :) I have access to a number of different computers to test with. I might even play with building the kernel into a live CD for testing.
[15:15:53] <mozmck> Have you gotten linuxCNC to run with the new kernel yet?
[15:19:04] <seb_kuzm1nsky> mozmck: i've run 'runtests' in realtime mode with this kernel, but i haven't tried to actually run linuxcnc
[15:27:17] <seb_kuzm1nsky> the reason master doesn't build is because hostmot2's pins.c tries to define an additional module parameter (in addition to the main module_params in hostmot2.c), and that apparently is verboten
[15:28:11] <seb_kuzm1nsky> moving the debug_pin_descriptors from pins.c to hostmot2.c makes it build, but i dont really know why, or if that's the right fix
[15:28:32] <seb_kuzm1nsky> calling andy pugh!
[15:28:33] <mozmck> I see. Those kind of fixes are interesting :)
[15:28:47] <seb_kuzm1nsky> heh, i've got a repo full of fixes like that ;-)
[15:29:13] <seb_kuzm1nsky> well, off to work, bye all!
[15:29:19] <mozmck> Could have something to do with #include file order. I've had weird problems with that.

[18:28:18] <seb_kuzm1nsky> that's the mdi queueing bug, i bet
[18:28:20] <andypugh> Ah well, who needs sim anyway?
[18:28:47] <seb_kuzm1nsky> yes, it is
[18:29:08] <skunkworks> seb_kuzm1nsky, this would ge what to test? http://highlab.com/~seb/linuxcnc/rtai-for-3.5-prerelease/
[18:29:15] <seb_kuzm1nsky> i just sent a request for testing to the emc-developers list
[18:29:24] <skunkworks> be
[18:29:27] <seb_kuzm1nsky> yep!
[18:29:50] <seb_kuzm1nsky> install all those debs on a vanilla 32-bit precise and compile linuxcnc by hand
[18:30:11] <skunkworks> ok.
[18:30:38] <seb_kuzm1nsky> i send it to emc-developers instead of emc-users because i think this is not ready for regular users yet
[18:31:00] <seb_kuzm1nsky> just for abnormal users who don't mind watching out for strange behavior and sending bug reports ;-)
[18:31:40] <skunkworks> I resemble that remark
[18:34:31] <seb_kuzm1nsky> i really made a mess with all those failing mdi queue tests... i'll try to clean that up asap

[19:11:23] <seb_kuzm1nsky> cradek: i have two bug fixes that can go into 2.5: the mdi queue fix that i want more runtime on before we release, and the toolno fix that i think is ready to go (but whose test fails because of the mdi queue bug)
[19:11:51] <seb_kuzm1nsky> in addition there are some tests that i added to 2.5 earlier that fail intermittently because of the mdi queue bug
[19:12:53] <seb_kuzm1nsky> so i think the thing to do is to disable the intermittently-failing tests, push the toolno fix, and release 2.5.2
[19:13:11] <seb_kuzm1nsky> then after 2.5.2, turn the tests back on and push the mdi queue fix
[19:13:19] <seb_kuzm1nsky> does that sound right?
[19:13:59] <seb_kuzm1nsky> that way we release 2.5.2 with less risky stuff in it, and we get the mdi fix into 2.5 in time to get plenty of runtime before 2.5.3
[19:15:47] <seb_kuzm1nsky> it would be nice to have some runtime on th etoolno fix too, i guess... i've been running it in my garage for a while now, but i bet there are many use cases and configurations that i dont exercise...
[19:16:16] <seb_kuzm1nsky> alternatively we could release 2.5.2 now, then push both my fixes, then release 2.5.3 in a few months after the dust settles from that...
[19:20:41] <cradek> seb_kuzm1nsky: I am not sure how much testing intermediate buildbot 2.5 releases get. I wish I knew that.
[19:21:22] <cradek> I guess I'm wondering how much benefit we'd really get from any waiting
[19:26:58] <seb_kuzm1nsky> cradek: the rate of package downloads from the buildbot is high, even in between releases: http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/~seb/billions-served/
