[10:57:00] <cncbasher> great to hear that
[10:58:40] <cncbasher> 7i43 via parrell port any forseen problems using that
[10:59:00] <mhaberler> you mean 5i25+7i43?
[10:59:14] <mhaberler> or parport+7i43?
[10:59:40] <mhaberler> dont know them detailz
[10:59:49] <cncbasher> parrell port 7i43
[11:00:36] <cncbasher> just i have 3 machiines using a 7i43 interface
[11:00:52] <cncbasher> and just about to kit another 2
[11:00:54] <mhaberler> does this use the parport driver or something else=

[11:03:44] <cncbasher> yes thats it
[11:05:00] <cncbasher> any build instructions for master or particular pull needed , i'll set up here and test if you wish
[11:05:19] <mhaberler> aha. it seems it doesnt use pci, so I'll enable it and let you know when you can give it a spin
[11:05:30] <mhaberler> I would _think_ it works without further ado
[11:05:46] <mhaberler> do you have rt-preempt or xenomai working?
[11:05:53] <cncbasher> ok micheal let me know and i'll set up a specific set
[11:06:15] <cncbasher> no i have not set up for xenomi as yet
[11:06:54] <mhaberler> try to get the 3.2.21 setup going, I think the devlist message might help
[11:07:29] <mhaberler> I'll be back later today; I would think all it needs is enabling in the makefile
[11:07:31] <cncbasher> ok .. have you a link
[11:07:39] <mhaberler> hm..
[11:08:45] <mhaberler> http://www.mail-archive.com/emc-developers@lists.sourceforge.net/msg07851.html
[11:09:09] <mhaberler> try to get so far that latency test runs and produces credible numbers
[11:11:22] <cncbasher> ok will do ...
[11:11:47] <cncbasher> thanks
[11:12:15] <mhaberler> well actually it does need work, because it uses the kernel infrastructure for parport
[11:12:29] <mhaberler> claim io regions and all that
[11:12:48] <mhaberler> but that should be 1:1 copyable from hal_parport because its in place there
[11:13:27] <mhaberler> its hal_parport_get() in hm2_7i43 which needs replacement
[11:13:38] <mhaberler> feel confident you can do it?
[11:13:55] <cncbasher> i'll get all set up here to test , and then see how it goes
[11:14:05] <cncbasher> i'll have a go ..
[11:14:22] <cncbasher> we all have to try sometimes
[11:15:02] <mhaberler> good. well what you can do is pull this http://git.mah.priv.at/gitweb/emc2-dev.git/shortlog/refs/heads/rtos-integration-preview2
[11:15:29] <mhaberler> then build and run a parport stepper config - that gives confidence all is in place
[11:15:37] <mhaberler> its just a patch from there
[11:16:04] <cncbasher> ok i'll shout you once i get it all to that point

[13:27:14] <mhaberler> cncbasher: it's a tad more work.. it needs a userland shim for the kernel firmware loading interface :-/
[13:33:01] <cncbasher> mhaberler: ok thanks for letting me know , i'll get it all set up in the meantime for testing later ,, any particular version of unbuntu to build against ?, as i'll build a new setup for testing
[13:33:29] <mhaberler> nope, builds fine with precise
[13:33:39] <cncbasher> ok thanks ..
[13:34:24] <mhaberler> actually the xenomai kernel (3.2) will be newer than the precise 3.0x so there's always a way to fixup things if needed by forwardporting an ubuntu kernel patch
[13:34:35] <mhaberler> not seen any need yet though
[13:35:01] <mhaberler> can I ask you to take notes during install and make them a document/wiki page?
[13:35:17] <cncbasher> yes no problem i'll do that
[13:35:27] <mhaberler> I have tunnel vision on this stuff, and turned to many knobs - I bet I'll miss sone

[13:45:05] <cncbasher> i presume we are using 32 bit or are good for 64 bit too ?
[13:52:14] <mhaberler> mine are 32 bit kernels, I have no experience with x86_64 but John Morris has
[13:52:58] <mhaberler> he did all work on x86_64 methinks, so it should be ok once somebody bakes a x86_64 xenomai kernel
[13:53:29] <mhaberler> I think he has, you could ask him (I wouldnt call it 'general public availability' ;)
[13:53:50] <mhaberler> he did one for precise, it could be rt-preempt though
[13:54:07] <mhaberler> xenomai gives better results
[13:58:27] <cncbasher> thanks
[14:14:07] <mhaberler> oh, good news. Charles already ported the kernel request_firmware interface to userland ;)
[14:14:25] <cncbasher> great
[14:15:30] <cncbasher> i'll try and get it up and running today with luck , grandaughter allowing haha
[14:15:38] <mhaberler> the patch was committed 41hours ago.. just-in-time principle at work ;)
[14:16:22] <mhaberler> so I better merge his work before I start dabbling with the 7i43.. this might delay that a bit though
[14:16:34] <cncbasher> i'll get it all up a nd running in a virtual box first , then on a real machine
[14:17:23] <mhaberler> good idea
[14:17:34] <cncbasher> wonder if Anders still needs his 5i20 card
[14:17:40] <mhaberler> I'm doing everything except driver stuff in vbox
[14:17:48] <cncbasher> time to buy some morw
[14:17:53] <mhaberler> should be smooth sailing now, all loose parts are in
[14:17:55] <cncbasher> more
[14:18:09] <mhaberler> "he who dies with the most junk wins"
[14:18:14] <cncbasher> just need the superglue to set now
[14:19:29] <mhaberler> I need to check, but I think the usermode pci drivers can be run on a vanilla kernel too; performance will be ho-hum but functionality should be in place
[14:20:01] <mhaberler> and bonus value: you can debug them with gdb and the house doesnt come down with a null pointer deref ;)
[14:21:16] <mhaberler> awallin: re your mesanet card: in case you have xenomai or rt-preempt running, can you do a smoke test for us?
[14:28:22] <andypugh> I have a fair collection of Mesa Hardware (5i23, 7i43, 5i25, 6i25)
[14:28:40] <andypugh> And about 13 other daughter cards.
[14:29:00] <mhaberler> oh! excellent zoo! sure we might find a bug in it too!
[14:29:13] <cncbasher> you going to jump in Andy ?
[14:29:52] <mhaberler> do you have xenomai or rt-preempt running? I will try with a non-RT kernel and see if it works but not 100% sure it will right away
[14:32:02] <cncbasher> i have gone for 12.04lts and xenomai
[14:33:44] <andypugh> That's where I am less useful, All my machines are on LiveCD OSes
[14:34:54] <andypugh> I have a dedicated dev machine, but that's PCI-E with the 6i25 in it.
[14:35:20] <mhaberler> fine, I think - one more PCI data point
[14:35:23] <andypugh> (And I am in the middle of something with that too)
[14:35:38] <mhaberler> ok, well the world will keep spinning
[14:36:16] <andypugh> Perhaps I should get another of those SATA DOMs for fast OS swaps.
[14:38:03] <cncbasher> andy any particular sata dom .. that proven to work well ?
[14:50:20] <mhaberler> now that I think of it: if this works you dont need a new kernel installed just to try the PCI userland drivers
[14:50:50] <mhaberler> it should actually work with RTAI running and --with-threads=posix --enable-drivers --enable-usermode-pci
[14:51:44] <mhaberler> ha! userland builds finally paying off
[14:54:00] <mhaberler> guess what: that works
