[22:55:26] <mhaberler> jepler: are you around?
[22:57:02] <mhaberler> I have a question wrt tests/thread.0 - you refer to 'Tests that threads run in the right order and with the right frequency'
[22:59:10] <mhaberler> where is the relative ordering of task execution specified? I cannot find a reference to, say a thread with 100uS period MUST execute exactly 10 times as often as a thread with 1000uS'
[22:59:19] <mhaberler> backdrop: simulator context
[23:02:21] <mhaberler> btw line number reporting in this test was broken, this will be fixed once this is merged: http://git.mah.priv.at/gitweb/emc2-dev.git/commit/b183586325462b70aad7c99506e6616fcbbffda9
[23:06:56] <jepler> It looks like the test I wrote originally assumes that if there's a K:1 ratio in thread times there's a 1:K ratio in number-of-executions
[23:07:15] <jepler> in fact in rtai we set up timers so that everything's an integer multiple of the fastest thread's interval
[23:07:39] <jepler> I am pretty sure there should be no *long term* divergence from a 1:K ratio
[23:08:11] <jepler> for instance, if you have a "100us" thread and a "1000us thread" and they run in a ratio of 5:1 in the long term, something's wrong
[23:08:16] -!- motioncontrol has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[23:08:41] <jepler> if it's a 10.1:1 ratio over 3.5 seconds, well, probably that's OK
[23:08:53] -!- mattions has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[23:09:04] <jepler> it looks like the test, as amended by Seb in '08, is substantially weaker than that; the '06 version was a bit more stringent
[23:09:14] -!- servos4ever has quit [Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.85 [SeaMonkey 2.0.11/20101206162726]]
[23:10:44] <jepler> RTAI on UP machines consistently passed the '06 version of the test, and I'm pretty sure sim (gnu pth) did as well
[23:10:57] <jepler> I have a feeling it's RTAI on SMP machines that brought us the '08 version of the test
[23:11:03] <jepler> but I'm not entirely confident of that history

[23:34:03] <kb8wmc> jepler: I managed to get the heater controller component compiled thanks to your input and guidance, now when I initiate linuxcnc and attempt to invoke the PID on, the frequency jumps up to 1004.2 and the Degrees C. = -444, when PID is off, the Degrees display -42.9 on of course frequency is 0.0...the PWM duty cycle never shows any change....any ideas?
[23:34:49] <andypugh> -444 C is not true, that's the only thing I am sure of :-)
[23:38:26] <kb8wmc> andypugh: yes, same here....lol....how have you been andy?
[23:40:02] <andypugh> Pretty much OK, just too many projects for the free time available.

[23:41:11] <kb8wmc> for me it is too soon old, to late smart...should have learned more when I was younger...
[23:41:22] -!- c60 has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[23:52:05] <mhaberler> the issue isnt with rtai, or xenomai - it is with posix threads (we merged the rt-preempt code into what was posix because its almost the same) - the test now fails on vbox based installs but not on real ones; 2.5 threads.0 is fine on vbox though
[23:52:50] <mhaberler> I'm trying to drill down to the assumption or requirement - 'long term divergence' - well sure but thats not what is tested for
[23:54:27] <jepler> what's the output look like in that case?
[23:54:39] <mhaberler> obviously we imported that from michael buesch code but I dont quite see yet where that behaviour diverges from 2.5 which is why I need the hard requirement
[23:55:31] <mhaberler> result isnt 1..10.1…10. but once 1,2,3,0… 9,10,11-17,1 and so on
[23:56:13] <jepler> and that's bad under the test because of 0?
[23:56:33] <jepler> it seems like the test is real weak right now (it doesn't measure long term ratio at all)
[23:56:39] <jepler> have to go, sorry.
[23:56:55] <mhaberler> http://static.mah.priv.at/public/result
[23:57:02] <jepler> kb8wmc: seems like you should have the frequency temperature input regardless of whether the pid output is on
[23:57:05] <mhaberler> yes, the 0 trips it
[23:57:06] <jepler> check wiring?
[23:57:48] <jepler> ah, because the run is interleaved as follows: increment / reset / sampler ?
[23:58:05] <mhaberler> right - still.. if you see two different behaviours and dont have a spec to validate against - what gives?
[23:58:10] <mhaberler> right
[23:58:17] <kb8wmc> jepler: I agree
[23:58:41] <jepler> I think that it will turn out that components are written with the assumption that the "slow" thread never preempts the "fast" thread...
[23:58:54] <jepler> but I am not sure where the guarantee is written
[23:59:04] <jepler> .. vs what has turned out to be an invariant by chance
[23:59:07] <jepler> really leaving this time
[23:59:19] <mhaberler> I would think in that case 'assumption' could be a tad dangerous
[23:59:24] <mhaberler> thanks anyway
[23:59:30] <kb8wmc> thanks jepler
[23:59:41] <kb8wmc> I will play with this
[23:59:58] <cradek> I'm pretty sure I've heard it said that slow threads are interrupted by fast threads, but never the other way
