[19:21:41] <wd5jwy> Hello all - does anyone here know how to successfully register for access to the forums on the LinuxCNC website?
[19:22:15] <wd5jwy> I've tried unsuccessfully for several days - it appears that the registration process is broken on the site.
[19:24:58] <awallin> there was a message to this effect on the mailing list
[19:25:08] <awallin> it may be broken..
[19:27:03] <wd5jwy> ah, ok - thanks. I was worried that I was doing something wrong, but couldn't figure out what it was.
[19:28:27] <wd5jwy> however, that message on the mailing list was probably from me - just submitted it yesterday. I was hoping an admin would see it and reply or fix the problem
[19:28:46] <awallin> there's an EMC forum on cnczone also which might attract answers
[19:29:12] <wd5jwy> yeah, I looked at that yesterday.
[19:29:25] -!- BMihulka has quit [Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.88.2 [Firefox 14.0.1/20120713134347]]
[19:29:59] <wd5jwy> maybe I'll try posting there as well - I think it's going to take an admin for the site to fix it. I have several questions regarding how best to develop a custom interface
[19:30:24] <awallin> for a non-cnc application?
[19:30:35] <wd5jwy> Sort of - cnc related
[19:30:45] <wd5jwy> I'm trying to build a coil winding machine
[19:30:50] <wd5jwy> using two stepper motors
[19:31:02] <wd5jwy> need to be able to control the speed of the motors in real-time
[19:31:19] <wd5jwy> so I think it will take a custom interface
[19:32:04] <wd5jwy> just wondering what tools to use to create it and whether the tools would have all the needed hooks into the emc control software to do what I need to do
[19:32:46] <awallin> do you want one motor controlled by g-code, and the other slaved (with a variable ratio) to the first ?
[19:33:00] <wd5jwy> sort of
[19:33:09] <wd5jwy> I don't really need g-code
[19:33:43] <wd5jwy> just a way to manually set the speeds of the two motors in relation to each other - it's actually the speed ratio between the two that is important
[19:34:42] <wd5jwy> the motors would only run in the 60 to 120 RPM range
[19:34:56] <wd5jwy> but the ratio of speed between the two is what is critical
[19:35:57] <awallin> with pyvcp you could hack something simpe together quite quickly I think
[19:36:23] <wd5jwy> yes, that's what I was thinking - I've been reading the documentation
[19:36:27] <wd5jwy> but one question had
[19:37:13] <wd5jwy> was whether pyvcp should be used or Glade instead
[19:37:48] <awallin> pyvcp is probably simpler. if you need fancy UI-elements and custom code then gladevcp
[19:38:39] <wd5jwy> that's what I've gathered from reading the docs and the forum threads, but I'm sure I'm going to need some detailed technical advice
[19:38:53] <wd5jwy> so, access to the forums would be very helpful
[19:39:11] -!- geo01005 has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[19:41:14] <wd5jwy> anyway, thanks for the response. I've got a lot more reading and playing around with the tools to do before I can ask any intelligent questions.
[19:41:52] <awallin> np
[19:44:01] <jthornton> wd5jwy, still around?
[19:44:05] -!- Loetmichel has quit [Disconnected by services]
[19:44:08] <wd5jwy> yes
[19:44:12] Cylly2 is now known as Loetmichel
[19:44:32] <jthornton> are you using a gmail account?
[19:44:42] <wd5jwy> yes
[19:44:42] <jthornton> to register with?
[19:45:19] <wd5jwy> will, I've submitted several registration requests using my gmail email as my email address
[19:45:27] <jthornton> http://linuxcnc.org/index.php/english/component/kunena/?func=view&catid=29&id=15595
[19:45:57] <jthornton> read this, and follow the instructions for registration using gmail
[19:46:20] <wd5jwy> ah, ok
[19:46:28] <jthornton> second thing you asked about a custom gui I have the beginnings of a tutorial on that if you want to see it
[19:47:08] <wd5jwy> yes, that would be very helpful - is it linked on the Wiki?
[19:47:17] <jthornton> let me know when your done registering
[19:47:33] <wd5jwy> oh, ok - let me try it again right now
[19:47:34] <jthornton> yes it is linked on the wiki

[19:50:19] <wd5jwy> thanks for the link
[19:50:32] <wd5jwy> I think I've already started reading that one too
[19:50:35] <jthornton> one moment
[19:51:35] <jthornton> Dennis you should get the conformation e mail soon
[19:51:44] <wd5jwy> excellent - thanks
[19:52:00] <jthornton> let me know when you reply to it
[19:52:08] <wd5jwy> ok, will do
[19:52:22] <jthornton> I would do this tutorial first http://gnipsel.com/glade/index.html
[19:52:23] <wd5jwy> I've been playing with cnc machines for years

[19:52:53] <jthornton> sorry about the spammer shield
[19:53:02] <wd5jwy> no problem - I understand
[19:53:19] <wd5jwy> I'm a system engineer by trade for a large telecom company
[19:53:24] <wd5jwy> so I fully understand
[19:53:47] -!- zzolo has quit [Client Quit]
[19:53:58] <wd5jwy> I can't beleive I've missed out playing with linuxcnc for all these years
[19:54:04] <wd5jwy> some great tools out there
[19:54:06] <jthornton> did you get the conformation email?
[19:54:10] <jthornton> yes it is great
[19:54:59] <wd5jwy> no confirmation email yet
[19:54:59] <jthornton> gee I can type faster than my spell checker can check
[19:55:08] <jthornton> let me send another one
[19:55:19] <wd5jwy> I just got it
[19:55:24] <wd5jwy> refreshed
[19:55:36] <wd5jwy> so I click on the link to confirm?
[19:55:45] <jthornton> yep
[19:56:04] <wd5jwy> ok, done
[19:56:36] <jthornton> ok Dennis welcome to the forum
[19:56:40] <jthornton> your good to go
[19:56:50] <wd5jwy> excellent - thanks for taking the time to help
[19:56:55] <jthornton> general questions are best asked on #linuxcnc
[19:56:58] <jthornton> np
[19:57:01] <wd5jwy> I'm going to have questions about the tools
[19:57:14] <wd5jwy> I've written code in C, C++ and Assembler
[19:57:24] <wd5jwy> so the code isn't the problem
[19:57:45] <wd5jwy> I thought the forums would be the best place to get answers
[19:58:33] <jthornton> I like the forum but there is a wealth of informed people on the mailing list and here, I guess it just depends on the format you prefer
[19:59:09] <jthornton> so we should switch this to #linuxcnc and leave this channel for development chatter
[19:59:23] <wd5jwy> I'll remember that - ok, thanks
