[00:45:42] -!- iwoj has quit [Client Quit]
[00:46:34] -!- hans [hans!~hans@d75-157-115-141.bchsia.telus.net] has joined #linuxcnc-devel
[00:48:33] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
[00:49:11] -!- tjb1 has quit [Client Quit]
[00:50:07] <hans> Hey guys i'm considering installing the hardy live cd for 64bit support, and i just want to know when we can expect the 12.04 live cd? I'm currently running 12.04 ubuntu studio. I've tried building with no success will i have to downgrade?
[00:50:57] -!- servos4ever has quit [Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.85 [SeaMonkey 2.0.11/20101206162726]]
[00:54:16] <KimK> hans: I can't give you an official answer, but due to the many changes in the new v3.x kernel, I would say it will be some time before anything happens. Can you get along with the 10.04/Lucid live CD instead of the Hardy/8.06? Some have reported success by using the 10.04 RTAI kernel with 12.04, but this is not guaranteed, and your results may vary.
[00:55:32] <KimK> hans: I presume here that you need real-time and not just sim?
[00:55:48] -!- atom1 has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
[00:55:55] <hans> yes
[00:56:03] <KimK> OK
[00:56:12] <hans> will it build if i have 10.04 x64?
[00:56:39] <hans> quote from dl page "Install Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx (for 32-bit) or 8.04 Hardy Heron (for 32- or 64-bit)"
[00:57:46] <KimK> Huh, I didn't know 8.06 was said to be better than 10.04 at 64-bit, whaddya know?
[00:58:22] <hans> i dont know either just why did they limit 10.04 to 32bit?
[00:59:21] -!- iwoj has quit [Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.]
[01:01:02] <KimK> I suspect it had to do with the not-quite-ready state of the 64-bit kernel and drivers about 2.5 years ago, but I'm afraid I'm not the guy to ask about any of this. If you can hang around for awhile, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will come along. What kind of CNC machine are you building?
[01:01:40] <hans> i have a 5 axis virtical mill
[01:02:41] <KimK> Excellent, home-built or factory? About how big? What's your I/O hardware and method?
[01:04:26] <hans> its a taig mill retrofitted with steppers and rotary tables controlled through gecko 540 and a seperate controller for the 5th axis
[01:05:20] -!- pjm has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[01:07:21] -!- Thetawaves has quit [Client Quit]
[01:07:21] <KimK> OK, very nice, thanks. As far as your install, if it were me, I would just use the 10.04 32-bit for now and wait to see what happens. I'll bet that you'll hardly notice any performance difference. I assume you plan to build from git v2.5_branch? Or maybe master if you don't mind a little breakage?
[01:08:11] -!- Thetawaves has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[01:08:19] <hans> i was running the 10.04 live cd before im not sure if it was 64bit but i was getting RT errors which i just ignored and ran with , it worked but i decided to try to fix it and update os at same time.
[01:09:00] <hans> ill stick with git master source with that new gscreen interface
[01:10:40] <hans> i think i might try Ubuntu Studio 8.04 x64 first if i cant manage to get it running on 10.04 nicely
[01:10:56] <KimK> OK, very good. Please keep us posted on your results. And you're welcome to try 12.04 with the 10.04 kernel, but remember that results are not guaranteed, it was just reported (alleged?) to work for someone, so I thought I'd mention it.
[01:11:13] <hans> ya i saw the blog
[01:12:21] <hans> i tried to add the deb line he mentioned "deb http://linuxcnc.org/ lucid base" but i get invalid keys error so i gave up on that
[01:13:24] -!- taiden has quit [Ping timeout: 248 seconds]
[01:13:29] <KimK> Maybe you have to enter new keys due to the EMC2 --> LinuxCNC changeover? I don't know.
[01:15:32] <hans> not sure what to do there, oh where to find the appropriate key. i really like my 12.04 x64 install right now sound card and other hardware are running great.
[01:17:32] <hans> tried building and it cant find RT "checking for RT dir... configure: error: RT not found. " , ubuntu studio comes with the RT kernel pre installed
[01:18:34] <hans> "Specify: --with-realtime=<path>" where is that?
[01:20:02] <KimK> Sorry, I don't know about the RT path. And I'm looking forward to those kinds of 12.04 improvements you mentioned as well, but I'm a little leery of the whole Unity thing, I might have to change to gnome or Xubuntu/XFCE or something if Unity is too "glitzy". I haven't played with it enough to know or care, 10.04 just keeps on working for me.
[01:20:25] -!- tjb1 has quit [Quit: tjb1]
[01:22:27] <hans> yea it is getting better in 12.04, glitzy is a good word for it ;) but i like Ubuntu studio's Xfce config which is what im using
[01:23:33] <KimK> OK, good to know, thanks.
[01:25:20] <hans> Thanks for chatting. I should come on more , I don't do much irc.
[01:26:45] <KimK> Sure, chat anytime, though this channel does run hot and cold, sometimes no one is around for awhile.
[01:27:20] <KimK> #linuxcnc has a larger audience, so there
[01:27:23] <KimK> oops
[01:27:32] <KimK> #linuxcnc has a larger audience, so there's usually someone around
[01:27:45] <hans> irc needs to get more popular in general
[01:27:48] <hans> cool thx

[18:34:40] <Diony> I encountered some problem with gladevcp. I want to run python mdi script (probe) when I push the button called "run" and simulate the probe contact with an other button. The proble is, the glavcp freeze during the probe python script execution.
[18:36:09] <Diony> I tried to call the python probe function in a thread but it doesn't work
[18:36:23] <Diony> How do you do?
[18:38:13] <Diony> Nobody use gladevcp?
[18:38:43] <Diony> mhaberler: Are you here?
[18:38:58] <cradek> I think very few do. be patient, stick around, and perhaps someone can help.
[18:39:43] <Diony> cradek: thank you for answering, I am not used to IRC channel
[18:40:29] <cradek> aha. yes a lot of new IRC users think they are being ignored if they don't hear an answer in 5 minutes. but often answers come much later, when the right person sees the question.
[18:41:34] <Diony> ok, so I will camp here :)
[18:41:35] <jthornton> Diony, about 3 times as many are on the #linuxcnc channel as the developer channel
[18:43:16] <jthornton> Diony, there is also a gladevcp section on the forum
[18:43:18] <Diony> jthornton: ok thanks for the advice
[18:43:41] <Diony> I will try there

[23:19:08] <andypugh> cradek?
[23:22:23] <andypugh> PCW has suggested that the current smart-serial pin naming (mesa_card.N.remote.port.channel.pin , eg hm2_5i23.0.7i76.0.3.digout.00.out) would be clearer and neater if it was mesa_card.N.remote.serialnum.pin. eg hm2_5i23.0.7i76.0000.digout.00.out (I seem to have 7i76 serial number 0!)
[23:22:43] <andypugh> That would mean that it didn't matter where the boards were plugged in.
[23:23:05] <andypugh> But making the change now would cause wailing and/or gnashing of teeth
[23:23:41] <cradek> my system with two 5i20 boards is sensitive to slots, too
[23:23:53] <cradek> is this worse or the same as that?
[23:24:31] <cradek> (fwiw the policy has always been that you can break existing configs, with good reason, on a new major version)
[23:24:46] <cradek> it's best not to if you can avoid it, of course.
[23:25:05] <andypugh> Will the current master be a major?
[23:25:12] <cradek> definitely
[23:25:37] <andypugh> PCW suggests a modparam, but that seems clunky,
[23:26:51] <cradek> break configs on 2.5 = no, otherwise I'd trust your judgement
[23:28:17] <andypugh> My judgement is to trust your judgement
[23:28:26] <cradek> heh
[23:29:09] <andypugh> While we are breaking configs, why not label 5i20s by serial not discovery order?
[23:29:52] <cradek> the only contrary reason I can come up with is that almost everybody has just one, so it's just extra work for them all
[23:30:06] <cradek> (you couldn't have a sample config that just runs, for instance)
[23:30:38] <cradek> but if you find more than one...? I dunno.
[23:31:11] <andypugh> That argues for a loadrt hostmot2 use_serial_numbers modparam
[23:31:28] <cradek> yeah possibly.
[23:31:59] <andypugh> Solves both issues. Doesn't make the hm2_pci string any more tedious to type in.
[23:32:32] <andypugh> Though, on reflection, I guess most people type that config string once per machine, not several times an hour.
