[01:19:56] <KimK> andypugh, mhaberler: Still around? I noticed your earlier discussion with Diony re: tool offsets. I wonder if I could throw something else in for consideration? What would it take (if anything?) to be able to use LinuxCNC with a tool presetter? You would obtain an actual measurement of the tool length and enter it into the tool table. Does this work as is, or would it need an additional arbitrary gage line (taper depth) offset to be applie
[01:19:56] <KimK> d to the stated tool length?
[01:19:59] <KimK> Oops
[01:20:13] <KimK> The tool presetters could be like these: (older micrometer-style:) http://www.industrialmachinery.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3717 (current? touch-probe-style:) http://www.directindustry.com/prod/big-daishowa/tool-presetters-for-tool-holder-33258-772109.html (state-of-the-art video-automated-style:) http://www.fordtoolandgage.com/shopexd.asp?id=72
[01:20:51] <andypugh> it's fine as long as the reference tool has the same eror
[01:21:11] <KimK> I'll have to think about that
[01:21:32] <andypugh> So, choose one tool to always have zero offsets, then the other tools are deltas from that one.
[01:21:49] <KimK> I guess the measuring device would become the reference tool?
[01:21:54] <andypugh> (in an ideal world that reference tool would be your probe)
[01:23:28] <andypugh> But, for example, on my lathe Tool1 (turn and face) always has offsets of zero. (except when I mess up) so touch-off of that tool goes into G54, but all other tools touch of into T
[01:24:42] <andypugh> It doesn't matter where that tool is in actual physical terms, in the same way as your toolsetter offset is irrelevant. Basically the toolsetter offset is part of the G54 offset
[01:25:03] -!- rob_h has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
[01:25:39] <KimK> I see. So then if you were using one of those fancy fixed microscope cameras for tool setting, then every tool would go into the tool table?
[01:26:03] <KimK> And the camera location would be the reference?
[01:26:19] <KimK> (Camera zero, or whatever?)
[01:26:59] <KimK> Camera zero = tooltip zero, maybe?
[01:28:14] <KimK> OK, thanks, good to know.
[01:31:54] <KimK> (Actually, I tend to use G59.3 for the reference, since everybody and his dog uses G54 for the part-program fixture offset, but nevermind, lol!)

[22:53:25] <alex_joni> mozmck: now
[22:53:35] <alex_joni> mozmck: it didn't boot
[22:53:43] <alex_joni> it started, but remained black
[22:53:54] <mozmck> I just tried with the same result. I had a blinking cursor
[22:53:58] <alex_joni> had no time to try to dig deeper
[22:54:01] <alex_joni> I had no cursor
[22:54:17] <mozmck> I've seen that screen before when doing this :)
[22:54:28] <alex_joni> well... :)
[22:54:48] <alex_joni> btw, I installed the regular way, not using ubuntu packages or anything
[22:54:54] <mozmck> Ok. I'm looking at it a bit. Have to go to town but maybe I'll do some more later tonight.
[22:55:22] <mozmck> I used make-kpkg which is the old debian way, because I'm using a vanilla kernel.
[22:55:36] <alex_joni> ah, I just used sudo make install
[22:55:42] <alex_joni> after a regular make menuconfig and make
[22:56:12] <alex_joni> not sure if either method includes needed things in initrd
[22:56:14] <alex_joni> or whatnot
[22:56:17] <mozmck> make-kpkg is nice because it builds packages for you that are easy to get rid of :)
[22:56:33] <alex_joni> well, I had to get rid of the whole install
[22:56:34] <mozmck> make-kpkg does if you tell it to.
[22:56:42] <alex_joni> needed the machine for something else
[22:57:02] <alex_joni> planned to try another, but ran out of round tuit
[22:57:58] <mozmck> I have a spare hard drive on this machine that has 32-bit ubuntu 12.04 just for messing with the kernel.
[22:58:38] <mozmck> 64-bit on my main drive, and I could cross compile, but this makes it easier for testing and everything.
