[16:59:41] <mhaberler> re queued MDI: have you guys made up your mind whether you want queued auto execution as well?
[17:00:04] <mhaberler> I dont quite see a reason to handle them differently

[17:36:38] icarusfactor is now known as factor
[17:41:41] <mhaberler> the theme: properly queueing MDI commands in task
[17:42:30] <mhaberler> the question: since MDI is just one form of input like open/run for auto: should one be able to queue ngc files for execution too
[18:00:12] <andypugh> One shouldn't be prevented from doing anything that takes more effort to prevent than allow, unless it is very foolish. If it takes more effort to allow than prevent, then the question is more difficult.
[18:03:02] <cradek> I don't understand the use case for queueing ngc files, or how a ui would allow a user to do this. can you elaborate?
[18:06:59] <mhaberler> Current UI's wouldnt be able to handle it - fine. IMO there is no clear case for handling MDI differently from auto to start with except for string vs file input, and I doubt the value of deepening that artificial distinction.
[18:07:38] <mhaberler> the distinction used to be 'file of blocks' versus 'single block' but that is history

[23:21:58] <andypugh> I am hating C right now.
[23:23:03] <andypugh> All I want to do is pass a string between functions. I am annoyed that I don't seem to be able to find a syntax that doesn't segfault and need a reboot.
[23:29:09] <cradek> you just pass the char*
[23:29:58] <andypugh> Yes, but, well, I don't get it.
[23:30:29] <cradek> ask a more specific question
[23:30:37] <andypugh> Seriously, why does passing a string in not-quite-the-right-way segfault the kernel?
[23:30:51] <cradek> not that question
[23:31:56] <cradek> passing it probably not your crash - dereferencing a bogus pointer is
[23:32:00] <andypugh> OK, specifically, How can I declare a variable as fixed-length-string in comp then pass it to a C function? Preferably without segfaults.
[23:32:32] <andypugh> Let me create a pastebin…
[23:32:40] <cradek> ok

[23:45:44] <cradek> you explained it to the bear?

[23:47:04] <andypugh> know -> no
[23:47:24] <andypugh> http://pastebin.com/AvaR26qp
[23:49:00] <andypugh> It's just painful because I have to reboot to reset RTAI and the kernel modules. And as I am working remote, I also have to log everthing back in.
[23:51:03] <cradek> suspect name is fine, it's (*hm2)->uart.instance[i].name that's null
[23:51:50] <andypugh> This seems to be the first time I have defintely got to the third function.
[23:52:32] <andypugh> But, yes, I have a feeling that thet code is utterly bogus.
[23:53:00] <andypugh> The wierd thing, I sent this patch out to someone a year ago and AFAIK it worked for them.
[23:53:35] <andypugh> This was just meant to be a quick "seems to work, no complaints" sort of push.
