[01:12:40] <GoSebGo> mozmck, i think 3.0 is the lts kernel, so i'd expect 12.04 to ship with that, and rtai to target it
[01:21:09] <CIA-9> EMC: 03tissf 07v2.5_branch * r5026afb128cc 10/docs/src/ (6 files in 2 dirs): French docs - cleaning and update
[01:23:55] <mozmck> GoSebGo: I read somewhere that 3.2 is the lts kernel. 3.0 is the 11.10 kernel.
[01:24:53] <GoSebGo> Yes youre right
[01:24:58] <mozmck> Yep, just looked at the makefile and it's 3.2
[01:25:29] <mozmck> I have the ubuntu-precise git tree pulled already, but no patch to apply :(
[01:29:09] <GoSebGo> 3.2 is not lts :-(
[01:29:11] <GoSebGo> http://www.kroah.com/log/
[01:30:28] <mshaver> Thoughts on what we'll do in April2012? How about a year after that if there's still no rtai for the Precise kernel?
[01:31:20] <GoSebGo> Stay on lucid i guess
[01:31:27] -!- chester88 [chester88!~chris@99.199.160.121] has joined #emc-devel
[01:32:11] <mshaver> You're right of course. Still I hope the rt guys don't run out of steam on us.
[01:32:36] <mozmck> I wonder why ubuntu picked 3.2 then? Maybe they don't know this?
[01:33:15] <mshaver> I doubt the availability of rtai on their kernel is a big factor to Canonical.
[01:33:38] <mozmck> oops, I was replying to GoSebGo saying 3.2 is not lts
[01:34:24] <mozmck> the Rtai folks just posted 3.9 test1 today.
[01:35:04] <mozmck> so there is some work there.
[01:35:19] <mshaver> Cool!
[01:35:35] <mozmck> Adeos does not have any patches for linux 3.x in x86 yet, although there are some for powerPC
[01:37:03] * mshaver is jonesing for the shiny
[01:41:07] -!- gene76 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[01:45:01] -!- factor has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
[01:49:05] * skunkKandT would have to look that saying up
[01:49:36] <skunkKandT> 3.9 works for the precise kernel?
[01:49:55] -!- ries has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]

[03:01:01] <jepler> GoSebGo: to be fair, if the longest-term maintainance kernel is 2 years from jan 2012, no kernel has enough longevity for ubuntu lts 12.04.
[03:01:50] <GoSebGo> 2.6.32 is still maintained...
[03:02:48] <jepler> "It is approaching it's end-of-life, and I think I only have another month or so doing releases of this"
[03:03:35] * seb_kuzminsky sobs quietly and rocks back and forth
[03:06:53] <skunkworks_> logger[psha]_:
[03:08:01] -!- sumpfralle has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[03:12:28] <jepler> if I had minions to order around they'd be working on the port to PREEMPT_RT .. and if that means we can sell everybody hardware step generators, that's just more revenue.
[03:12:42] <jepler> luckily, that's not the real universe, I don't have any minions or hardware sales
[03:14:58] <seb_kuzminsky> i want glasshouse-style cloning and merging
[03:32:26] <skunkworks_> can someone explain what this means in 10 words or less? https://mail.rtai.org/pipermail/rtai/2012-January/024831.html
[03:32:59] <skunkworks_> are they in effect saying that the 3.whatever linux kernel will not be supported for a while?
[03:33:38] <seb_kuzminsky> i'm not sure, skunkworks
[03:34:07] <seb_kuzminsky> the subject sounds nice and general, but then paolo spends most the email talking about comedi, which is an analog/digital i/o subsystem for linux
[03:36:23] <skunkworks_> ah - that is what comedi is... I thought it was a code name for some version of linux.. (didn't get around to googling)
[03:36:48] <seb_kuzminsky> the 3.9-test1 changelog says they support up to 2.6.38
[03:38:10] <seb_kuzminsky> i think we'll have to either do the work ourselves (not me!), or wait for someone else to do it, or switch to another (shittier) realtime kernel
[03:39:47] -!- Valen has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
[04:03:46] <jepler> nobody but us is trying to combine rtai + modern gui desktop. if we (our users) didn't want current hardware support for video and network, we could live with old kernels indefinitely. but here we are.
[04:03:50] <jepler> goodnight.

[12:59:22] <jthornton> dewey has fixed a problem with HAL Configuration where the status line and the test this command line are not properly visible. http://imagebin.org/193036
[12:59:48] <jthornton> however he gave two options this one http://imagebin.org/193035
[13:00:23] <jthornton> and this one http://imagebin.org/193037
[13:01:00] <jthornton> the second option sends the output from the HAL command to the show window and works better for commands that use a wildcard
[13:01:45] <jthornton> Both patches are for 2.5, so I need some guidance here
[13:10:32] -!- sumpfralle has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
[13:15:48] <jepler> where are the patches?
[13:17:16] <JT-Shop> hang on a sec and I'll get the links for you
[13:20:07] <mozmck> GoSebGo: re: linux 2.6.32: although that is still the default in 10.04, Ubuntu now offers 2.6.38 for 10.04 in it's standard repo. http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Two-new-kernels-for-Ubuntu-10-04-LTS-1377947.html

[13:25:00] <jthornton> http://www.panix.com/~dgarrett/stuff/halshow_v3.mbox
[13:27:31] <jepler> it looks like the real change is -width 26 to -width 10
[13:27:33] <jepler> hiding in here
[13:27:34] <jepler> - set disp [text $stf.tx -wrap word -takefocus 0 -state disabled \
[13:27:35] <jepler> - -relief flat -borderwidth 0 -height 26 -yscrollcommand "sSlide $stf"]
[13:27:39] <jepler> + set ::disp [text $f1.top.tx -wrap word -takefocus 0 -state disabled \
[13:27:40] <jepler> + -width 0 -height 10\
[13:27:42] <jepler> er, -height
[13:28:50] <jepler> personally, I'd take the minimal change for the stable branch. stuff like changing variable references to use the :: syntax would be better placed in a second commit, and that's master-only stuff
[13:29:36] <jthornton> that's kinda what I thought too

[17:09:52] <JT-Shop> cradek: I'm good with that :)
[17:10:06] <cradek> do you know of any problems, docs or otherwise?
[17:10:35] <JT-Shop> just with the HAL Configuration screen and I'm working with Dewey to fix that
[17:10:42] <cradek> ok cool
[17:10:45] <JT-Shop> it is just a display problem
[17:11:05] <cradek> I knew of missing touchy macro docs, but fixed that

[18:46:57] <mshaver> PID Question: I have a HAL PID block controlling the spindle velocity loop on my machine. At the startup of EMC, command, feedback and output are all 0.0. Once I run the spindle and then stop it, command and feedback settle back to 0.0, but the output decreases only to around 0.07-0.08 or so. Deadband is 0.0. Why is this?
[18:47:39] <mshaver> Oh, 2.5-pre from the buildbot yesterday.
[18:49:10] <mshaver> P gain is currently 0.1, I is .03, and D is 0.0.
[18:50:42] <mshaver> No FF terms either.
[18:52:38] <cradek> with tiny I couldn't it take a very long time to settle?
[18:53:30] <mshaver> I do need to increase I anyway. I should also look at pid.0.error.
[18:53:58] <mshaver> Let me fool with it a bit more & get back to you. This just seemed weird to me.
[18:54:06] <cradek> doesn't pid have an enable? seems like you should disable it when the spindle is off. this would clear the integrator I think.
[18:54:27] <mshaver> Good idea!
[18:54:54] <mshaver> I'll do that as well just on general principles!
[18:55:25] <cradek> I've not had good luck with spindle pid. too slow to respond I think.
[18:55:52] <cradek> but also this was before index-safe velocity like we have now.
[18:55:55] <mshaver> cradek: Just an FYI - andypugh's changes to 2.5-pre worked well, so no worries.
[18:56:19] <cradek> yay
[18:56:34] <cradek> he's a master.
[18:56:53] <cradek> bbl
[18:58:13] <mshaver> Have a good lunch!
[18:58:41] <mshaver> I gotta use PID on the spindle because the 8i20 is current (torque command) input...

[20:40:56] <Ekkeri> no problem, I think I will install 2.5 soon, just wondering when.. if there are some "important" fixes coming, like that HAL Config screen thingy..
[20:41:14] <Ekkeri> but updating should be quite easy?
[20:41:34] <mshaver> It was for me - no config breaking changes
[20:42:02] <Ekkeri> well, I don't even have configs yet, just wondering those pre->pre->v2.5 updates :)
[20:42:24] <Ekkeri> installed 2.4.7 today for my new hardware
[20:43:11] <mshaver> Unless you're doing things with brushless DC motors, Mesa hardware, or ngcgui, 2.4.7 is fine.
[20:44:15] <mshaver> The new documentation is spectacular as well!
[20:45:05] <Ekkeri> I have Mesa 7I52 so 2.5 is a must
[20:45:18] <Ekkeri> I'm total newbie with these thou
[20:45:57] <mshaver> 7i52; I'll have to look that one up...
