[19:05:59] <dgarr> halscope saga: http://filebin.ca/njowyj/02mar_2.2.8.txt
[19:22:43] <jepler> the baffling thing is, there are no halscope changes from 2.2.6 to 2.2.8
[19:23:07] <jepler> if I understand right, 2.2.6 worked for you
[19:24:02] <dgarr> jmk suggested i try compiling an older version so i started with 2.2.8. 2.2.6 has worked for me using binary packages. i will try compiling it next
[19:24:30] <alex_joni> 2.2.6 compiled by you vs. binary package will probably provide a lot of insight
[19:24:49] <dgarr> i predict it will segfault too
[19:24:51] <alex_joni> maybe? you have some corrupted gtk lib on the system which gets linked ot the halscope binary?
[19:25:01] <alex_joni> although something like that shouldn't happen
[19:25:38] <dgarr> i'm using debug packages in order to get a good backtrace: libglib2.0-0.dbg and libgtk2.0-0.dbg
[19:26:00] <alex_joni> what gcc and g++ ?
[19:26:53] <jepler> gcc version: gcc (GCC) 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)
[19:27:02] <dgarr> gcc (GCC) 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7) g++ (GCC) 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)
[19:29:51] <dgarr> biab going to test with 2.2.6
[19:35:41] <alex_joni> sorry.. didn't read close enough
[19:39:01] <jepler> hi rayh
[19:39:06] <rayh> HI Jeff
[19:39:28] <rayh> Did you guys figure out a time and place for fest?
[19:39:28] <alex_joni> hi rayh
[19:39:35] <rayh> Hi Alex.
[19:39:51] <jepler> no, we're chronically unable to make decisions.
[19:40:16] <rayh> Roland just called.
[19:40:25] <jepler> how's he doing?
[19:40:50] <rayh> Village Press -- the guys who publish Digital Machinist are interested in carrying on.
[19:41:03] <rayh> But they can't get their act together for this year.
[19:41:14] <rayh> And don't know where it will be located when they do.
[19:41:31] <rayh> Roland is good. Off the last of the meds as of next weekend.
[19:42:02] <rayh> All of his hardware will be up for auction during the first week of June.
[19:42:40] <rayh> Jeff you really need that BIG G&L
[19:42:51] <jepler> heh I need nothing of the sort
[19:44:35] <jepler> rayh: if someone else is going to pick up the CNC Workshop banner next year, that's another indication that this year we should focus on something emc specific and with a smaller scope
[19:47:13] <rayh> I think you are very right.
[19:47:39] <rayh> We need an EMC2 gathering and it will be easier if we do it for our folk.
[19:48:17] <jepler> and personally I like any option that's an easy day's drive for me
[19:49:28] <rayh> How do you feel about Matt's offer of the Smithy space in Ann Arbor?
[19:50:12] <rayh> Or Stewart's offer in Witcheta(sp)
[19:52:30] <jepler> At Stuart's there a possibility of interesting machines to work on, but the local restaurants are lousy
[19:53:25] <dgarr> halscope segv on 2.2.6 built from cvs checkout: http://filebin.ca/tegzcp/02mar_2.2.6.txt
[19:54:12] <jepler> on the basis of "devil that I know", I'd probably lean towards Kansas..
[19:55:13] <rayh> 960.20 miles from here
[19:55:50] <rayh> I agree that he has an interesting set of machine abilities that developers can work with.
[20:00:40] <jepler> dgarr: how easily can you test package 2.2.6?
[20:01:00] <dgarr> not sure what you mean
[20:01:04] <jepler> if 2.2.6 package still works, then the problem is in your build. If it's broken now, then either your recollection is wrong or an upgrade to another package affected it
[20:01:23] <jepler> "apt-get install emc2=1:2.2.6", run /usr/bin/halscope, see if it crashes too
[20:04:11] <dgarr> i had made some customizations in scripts that would take a while to figure out again -- these are things i've submitted patches for which is why i really want to run trunk/2.3
[20:05:23] <dgarr> i dont do regular upgrades of other packages -- only by manual selection
[20:07:06] <dgarr> pretty convince the problem is with my build or build environment not sure what to change
[20:10:49] <alex_joni> how about just taking the binary for halscope from the deb?
[20:11:41] <dgarr> i could do that, do you know the sequence to get a single file from the deb
[20:13:03] <jepler> if emc 2.2.8 is in your working dir, "dpkg-deb -x emc2_2.2.8....deb /tmp/emc2.2.8" should put it in /tmp/emc2.2.8/usr/bin/halscope
[20:13:06] <alex_joni> dgarr: I use mc
[20:13:32] <alex_joni> with mc when you hit enter on a deb it only opens it up, without installing it
[20:13:33] <jepler> that is, if the .deb is in your working dir
[20:13:49] <alex_joni> I think the deb is basicly a tar.gz
[20:14:02] <alex_joni> so another thing to do is rename it to tar.gz then unpack it
[20:14:25] <dgarr> biab i'll work on this, thanks
[20:46:44] <alex_joni> hi seb_kuzminsky
[20:46:54] <seb_kuzminsky> hi :-)
[20:47:08] <alex_joni> got a couple of things for you .. if you have time :)
[20:47:24] <seb_kuzminsky> i have a little time right now, more in a couple hours
[20:47:26] <seb_kuzminsky> so go ahead
[20:48:05] <alex_joni> http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Emc2.3Status
[20:48:14] <alex_joni> added some hostmot2/mesa ideas there
[20:49:05] <seb_kuzminsky> i like removing the hostmot2 config, people are better off looking at the hm2-{stepper,servo} configs now
[20:49:07] <alex_joni> nothing definitive, but wanted to put them somewhere so they don't get forgotten
[20:49:25] <seb_kuzminsky> i dont think we should temove the m5i20 config yet...
[20:49:37] <alex_joni> not sure about the m5i20, but I think it would be wise to at least put some warnings on it
[20:49:44] <alex_joni> (maybe in the README)
[20:49:50] <seb_kuzminsky> i agree a deprecation warning in the m5i20 readme is a good idea
[20:51:03] <BJT-Work> I put some warnings in the manual on the 5i20
[21:03:08] <alex_joni> seb_kuzminsky: feel free to adapt the page to what you think is needed
[21:03:16] <alex_joni> those were only suggestions
[21:03:43] <alex_joni> the extended part for the hm2-servo came from helping a user which had a hard time figuring out what the IO pins are called
[21:04:00] <seb_kuzminsky> i saw some stuff about the firmware packages being built wrong, did jeff or someone fix that?
[21:04:29] <dgarr> halscope binary result http://filebin.ca/udtoku/02mar_2.2.8-binary.txt
[21:04:33] <seb_kuzminsky> well, looking up the names of io pins in the manpage *is* very complicated...
[21:05:11] <dgarr> i wonder if some kind soul with hardy&emc2.2.8 could startup halscope and run lsof|grep halscope to show libraries in use
[21:08:32] <alex_joni> seb_kuzminsky: jeff fixed that
[21:08:42] <seb_kuzminsky> jepler: thanks :-)
[21:08:51] <alex_joni> seb_kuzminsky: basicly s/any/all/
[21:09:05] <alex_joni> any specifies the package can be built for any architecture
[21:09:16] <alex_joni> all specifies there's a single package for any architecture
[21:09:31] <seb_kuzminsky> makes sense
[21:11:06] <alex_joni> seb_kuzminsky: once you look it up obviously ;)
[21:11:20] <alex_joni> re man page, I looked and it wasn't _that_ transparent
[21:11:33] <seb_kuzminsky> well that's because i suck at writing docs
[21:12:14] <BJT-Work> Oh no can't break line is back :)
[21:14:15] <alex_joni> haha
[21:14:30] <alex_joni> BJT-Work: I can vividly imagine you waking up from a nightmare screaming that
[21:15:01] <BJT-Work> after all the time it took to get rid of it last time yep :)
[21:16:17] <alex_joni> seb_kuzminsky: I looked at the manpage for hostmot2 and at the lyx docs about hostmot2
[21:16:29] <alex_joni> they look lots better than I remembered (not sure why :D)
[21:16:32] <BJT-Work> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_5JoGCBt34
[21:16:41] <alex_joni> but they could use 1-2 complete examples
[21:16:55] <seb_kuzminsky> alex_joni: ah yes, examples
[21:16:57] <seb_kuzminsky> that would be good
[21:17:09] <seb_kuzminsky> * seb_kuzminsky scribbles in the todo file
[21:17:18] <alex_joni> instead of only having: hm2_<BoardType>.<BoardNum>.gpio.<IONum>.
[21:17:41] <alex_joni> maybe also have: example: hm2_5i20.0.gpio.023.in and in-not
[21:19:09] <alex_joni> seems some guys on a german forum are having a mesa group-buy ;)
[21:19:27] <alex_joni> reminds me of jmk's movement ..
[21:19:44] <seb_kuzminsky> alex_joni: are they buying the 5i20?
[21:19:48] <alex_joni> 9 pcs
[21:20:15] <alex_joni> and a couple 7i31 & 7i33 & 7i37
[21:20:19] <seb_kuzminsky> cool
[21:21:50] <seb_kuzminsky> i'll add the pin name examples to the manpage, but can someone else add the limit switch stuff to the sample configs?
[21:21:57] <seb_kuzminsky> someone with limit switches perhaps?
[21:22:16] <seb_kuzminsky> got to go, bbl
[21:22:21] <alex_joni> see you later
[21:22:58] <BJT-Work> see you later seb_kuzminsky
[22:37:45] <CIA-2> EMC: 03tissf 07TRUNK * 10emc2/docs/src/gcode/main_fr.lyx: french translation update
[23:09:37] <seb_kuzminsky> ok, who sneezed on the server?
[23:12:55] <tomaw> [Global Notice] Hi all. A couple of our hubs lost connectivity for a minute or so there resulting in a rather large and noising split. We have worked around the issue for now and are hopeful things will now settle down. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for using freenode!
